Mozart composed his two ??Lodron Serenades? for open-air performances on the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron in June 1776 and 1777. Their bright ??al fresco? character is immediately recognisable. Alfred Einstein considered these two divertimentos to be ??among the purest, gayest, most satisfying, and most perfect that ever assumed musical form?.For both works Mozart chose an ensemble of two horns, two violins, viola and bass instruments. However, the second Lodron Serenade, the Divertimento in B-flat major K. 287, stands out from this sextet format by assigning a remarkably virtuosic solo role to the first violin, from the richly diverse opening movement to the finale with its almost ironic recitative and an exhilarating passage on the folk song ??D??Bäurin hat d??Katz verlorn?. Mozart himself played first violin in the 1777 performance. Later he wrote, ??They all opened their eyes! I played as though I were the finest fiddler in all Europe?.

I met for the first time the refined Finnish composer Kai Nieminen in Milan (Italy), although we had been in touch for a while before. It was that very trip which provided the inspiration for this composition dedicated to Bruno Munari, one of the most renowned XXI century Italian artists, who lived and worked in Milan. In particular, the work that inspired this composition, displayed at Museo del Novecento in Milan and characterised by swirling lines enveloping torn-out music scores, suggested the mysterious atmosphere of this piece and the subheading Un telegramma dal paese dei sogni (A telegram from dreamland). The composition can be divided into four sections and displays a wide variety of harmonics, cleverly enhancing the polyphonic resources of the guitar. The very first bars introduce the main themes of the composition: particularly, at bar 7 it is possible to recognize a Bach quote from Das wohltemperierte Clavier (II book, ndeg24) recurring frequently in the piece and appearing also in the painting. Meno mosso (bar 51) opens with a ghostly song accompanied by drum-like effects that recall the primitive sound of the shamanic Finnish drum. Fast sixteenth cascades dotted by harmonic sounds open the fourth and last section at bar 66 (Capriccioso, movendo), alluding to a mysterious telegram sent from another dimension.

'Flee the storms.' Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) put this motto of classical artists at the heart of his music for piano four hands, preferring the balance of proportions to the roar of passions, the eclecticism of good taste, charm and delicacy. Berceuses falls within the French tradition of children's music such as illustrated by Faure's Dolly and Ravel's Ma mere lOye. These seven pieces evoke with refinement the happiness of a cloudless day, the effervescence that reigns on Christmas Eve, or the gentle syncopated rocking of a young Creole, Selfiana. The Variations pueriles sur une melodie de Carl Reinecke manifest a free, whimsical vein, whereas the Trois preludes sur des airs irlandais drink at the pure sources of folk music, borrowing their thematic material from the famous collection Songs of Old Ireland which Stanford had brought out in 1882. Published for the first time from ahandwritten score, the Variations sur un theme de Charles Levade end with a wild quadrille that takes the heroes of the celebration to the nearest inn. The Piece en forme daria et Bergerie from 1896, finely polished, takes up with the ambiance of the pastorale, popular in the 17th century.

In her powerful Foreword to the music, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins has written: “There are great works which give voice to important moments for generations, and this is one of them.” The tragedy of Elijah McClain’s murder has moved us all, and for many musicians the image of this gentle young man playing his violin for kittens at an animal shelter has added a poignant extra layer. Zwilich was a professional violinist before turning exclusively to composing, and A LITTLE VIOLIN MUSIC is a memorial from the heart of one violinist to another.[THESE NOTES MAY NOT BE REPRODUCED OUTSIDE OF THE PUBLICATION; OK TO QUOTE A BIT AND GIVE AUTHOR CREDIT]We often research important pieces of music to gain some glimpse into the mind of the composer by understanding the times in which a piece was written. The times that brought this piece into being, 2020, has been a year like no other in our lifetimes. With the suffering of a once in a century pandemic raging in ever higher waves, and millions of people around the world confined to their homes with a shared attention span for the first time in generations, we watched in horror the 8 minute 46 second killing of George Floyd, a man previously unknown to us, but now unwillingly joining a long list of names of unarmed African Americans killed by police. The anguished backlash of citizens around the world, from Japan to New Zealand to Germany to the United States, of every age, color, and creed, has rallied for weeks and months on end to demand enough and that “Black Lives Matter.”And yet, in the midst of it all is an America starkly divided against itself with some defiantly pushing back, emboldened by authoritarian-style government actions against its own citizens occurring all over the country. It is against this backdrop that we ever had a chance to know of Elijah McClain. Here in quarantine I sometimes practice my scales in front of the news. And one day the mirror image looking back at me from the screen was a slight young man, warm, affable brown eyes, and also a violin under his chin. The newsreel-style camera pan so familiar now, I knew the only reason we were gazing upon his unfamous face was that he too had been killed by police nearly a year before. But the revelation of it in the broadcast hit me particularly hard.Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who is not only one of the great composers of our time, is also a dear friend, and called me the next day, also deeply saddened by the news. It was from Ellen that I learned that Elijah used to play for the kittens at the local animal shelter so they wouldn’t be lonely. This kind, gentle soul was aggressively taken into police custody while saying, “I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking... I’m going home.” He was never seen alive again.Ellen and I spoke of the sadness and the injustice of this several times. She felt a powerful calling to contribute something in a statement and the result is the piece you now hold in your hands. I am deeply honored to be the dedicatee of the piece, to have worked together with Ellen on some of the final details, and to pen this score note. As an invited alumna of the Eastman School of Music, I premiered the work for their virtual event on Diversity and Inclusion. Each time I play it, there is a persistent lump in my throat because Ellen has captured something poignant and powerful here. There are great works which give voice to important moments for generations, and this is one of them. We humbly offer this piece in memory of Elijah McClain.Foreword © 2021 by Kelly Hall-Tompkins. Used by permission.

The Complete Chorales are an Urtext edition of all four-part chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach and the new standard in editing for this genre. Musicologist Thomas Daniel, a well-known specialist for the topic of Bach chorales, divided the chorales in two parts of about equal length: Chorales from cantatas, motets, and passions that were confirmedly written by Bach are found in the first part, while the second part includes chorales from later sources and printings, e.g. the four-volume edition published by Breitkopf in 1784 to 1787. Thereby, the authentic chorales are clearly separated from the chorales of partly dubious authorship for the first time. Drawing on new sources, e.g. from the archive of the Berliner Sing-Akademie, some settings can even be attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - contrary to his claim in the preface of the Breitkopf edition that all songs were created by my dear late father. The volume includes an informative preface and a separate introduction on the edition for both parts while giving editorial remarks for each chorale for the first time, directly below the score. Additionally, it provides helpful indices that allow searches for text incipits, BWV numbers, melody composers, and lyricists.Get an insight into our material with the reading sample. In the Download section, you can also find a concordance to the previous edition. This is a treasure trove of fine music, beautifully presented and intelligently edited. [...] It will become my reference for Bach chorales. (Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)All four-part chorales by Bach in an Urtext edition for the first time. Authentic chorales clearly separated from those of dubious attribution. New insights on the authorship of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
