Festive Variations on Lasst uns Erfreuen, is based freely on the German chorale melody more commonly known as All Creatures of Our God and King. In five variations, this work begins with an Allegro introduction in 6/8, followed by a serene statement of the theme. The first variation reflects the 6/8 optimism of the introduction. The second has a more majestic texture in 3/4 time, featuring brass and percussion. The third variation is a scherzo, fairly fragmentary and more disjunct than the others. This is the most academic of the variations. The fourth is a gentle ballad freely based on the first four notes of the melody. The fifth variation returns to the complete melody, found in a fugato with variations within. Before the work concludes, the original introduction and theme are restated in their first form, followed by a coda based on the introductory motive.

Variations on a Theme of Haydn (2017) was written for organist Christoph Hintermuller who asked for a work based on the national anthem of Germany. The anthem's tune was written in 1797 by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). (In English-speaking countries, Haydn's tune is sung as the hymn AUSTRIAN HYMN, usually with John Newton's text Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.) The music consists of five contrasting variations plus a recapitulation of the opening variation. The first variation is broad and festive; the second variation is pastoral in character; the third has a scherzando character; the fourth is marked hypnotic and atmospheric; and the fifth is a quasi-musette. The first variation returns as a finale before a brief coda. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Großer Gott, wir loben dich is a well-known German hymn, written by Ignaz Franz in the 18th century but based on the 4th century Te Deum laudamus. After a radiant introduction by the brass section, the first variation on the chorale appears. Subsequently, the song is rendered in its original form. Then three more variations follow. The result is a solemn work that is very fitting within the context of a church service, but is also suitable for many other occasions. On the workFor many years I was the director of festive music at our local church in Orpington. I always carried a little music notebook on me for use during the sermons. I remember writing a series of notes, as a challenge to use as a melody when I got home, then I realised it used all twelve notes of the scale. Having been penned during a sermon, I decided to use this as a structure. The tone row became the sermon and the following variations the reactions to this sermon. As a clue to the ideas behind the music, I added sectional headings to each variation. While this is a serious work musically, it is actually meant to be a piece of fun!
