June Armstrong's songbook The Girona Suite - Eight Evocations For Piano features eight original and challenging compositions for grades five to seven standard, all inspired by the shipwreck of the Spanish galleas, the Girona.The pieces included in this songbook were all composed specifically for this collection by revered pianist and teacher June Armstrong. Her many years of experience in teaching have allowed her to craft compositions both subtle and powerful that stretch the ability of students while giving them an engaging story on which to base their expression and feeling when playing. Armstrong is an advocate of focusing learning on atmosphere and tonal awareness, which, when combined with the necessary techniques and theory, makes this songbook a learning tool that is theoretically sound and musically enticing.From the first page, the composer has shown her commitment to creating pieces specifically for students learning the Piano, as she writes of how many people, including former students, have inspired her. She then writes in detail about the historical context of the theme of the work, before giving more practical advice on the music itself and how to go about playing it. The friendly and warm approach that Armstrong brings to presenting her suite makes it more than a simple songbook, it becomes a personal journey, where the composer herself guides you through the characters and settings that the music has been composed to evoke. As well as presenting challenging and entertaining pieces, Armstrong's work serves as a fantastic introduction into how major and minor keys can be manipulated to different ends, and how motifs can be used together with a theme. The Souls Of The Righteous is an anthem for SATB choir with an Organ reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. It takes its text from the Old Testament book of Wisdom. Sir George Elvey (1816-1893) was a British organist and composer. He was a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral and New College Oxford before studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Such was his skill he became Organist at St George’s Chapel Windsor at the age of just nineteen having been offered the post in preference to far more experienced candidates such as Samuel Wesley. He wrote prolifically for the Chapel creating many works that were only performed once andhave now been lost. Best remembered are his hymn tunes oratorios and anthems.

To some the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne would need no introduction and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981 has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band conducted by Ian Porthouse at St. Michael’s Church Newquay on 30th December 2008. Penleehas been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame but it was also the highest new entry. The work has subsequently been recorded by the Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris on the CD entitled Penlee .Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 13 minutes
