Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127867). Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

A Christmas Story for A Waltz of Lights:Once upon a time, on a magical Christmastime night just like this, in a cozy home, just like yours, a very special event took place.As all the house drifted off into a peaceful holiday sleep, one by one, the Christmas lights were touched by Santa’s magic, and burst into life for their nightly waltz.Each light danced gracefully with their partner, sparkling as they glided around the tree. They gazed at the Christmas decorations as they spun about the room, the sight of the beautiful ornaments filling them with joy.Now it was time for the brightest lights to perform their dazzling twirl! They spun and spun, giving a beautiful performance for all of the smallest lights, who watched in awe. The brightest lights then invited the smaller ones to once again join in the dance, and together, all of the lights created a magical scene, a most enchanted color spiral, that can only be created by Christmas magic.Dawn had approached all too soon. One by one, the lights settled back onto the tree to rest for the day. One small light, however, had decided it couldn’t let go of the magnificent night just yet, and continued to do one final solo dance. The phrase wherethe title (Solitude is Oneself)comes from belongs to Javier Adúriz (1948-2011), Argentine poet, one ofmy best teachers and friends (the original Spanish reads "La soledad es uno mismo").
Don'tsee any negative aspects in Solitude. In Spanish there is only one word forSolitude and Loneliness (namely "Soledad"). Loneliness is a state ofisolation, without dialog, feeling abandoned and without external points ofreference. But I conceive Solitude as a highely creative state, in which one isfaced to what one actually wants to achieve, with one's thoughts, with one'sself.
NeverUnderestimate the Difficulties of Simple Things. Lots of times I have seenthis in several persons - and in myself: when something is simple, easy anduncomplicated, we tend to underestimate it too much and its hidden difficultiesend up tackling us. We leave to the last moment a text that seems easy tolearn, and we do not assimilate it as we could. Or a chess game that is(really) won, but we feel over-confident, we play with superficiality, we makeslight mistakes one after the other and loose control of the situation.
Thistitle can be understood as self-referent: this particular piano piece seems tobe simple... until you try to perform it really well and record it.
