by Diego Marani Richard Galliano is a French accordionist of Italian heritage. After a long and intense period of study, at 14, in a search to expand his ideas on the accordion, he began listening to jazz and heard records by the trumpet player Clifford Brown. The second decisive meeting took place in 1980, with the Argentinean composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla.
Astor strongly encouraged Richard to create the French “New Musette”, as he himself had previously invented the Argentinean “New Tango”.
Some later collaboration include Chet Baker, Eddy Louiss, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Charlie Haden,
Gary Burton, Michel Portal, Toots Thielemans and Kurt Elling.
This arrangement for string quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello) of one of his most famous and performed pieces (with clear rhythmic references to the Piazzolla's "Libertango") is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital Morango ... almost a tango, full score

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869118). Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is the most popular piece of music from my portfolio of over 150 works!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams. Here is one of the most popular tangos of all time. Por una Cabeza (for one brain) has been used in film (Scent of a Woman, True Lies) and TV. It has a playful G-major melody interrupted by a stout G-minor middle section. If you can't have fun playing this piece, you might want to reconsider your musical life. This is for advanced players, especially the 1st violin. For a less advanced violinist, you can ignore the 8va toward the end. All parts are important, and all have their own tricky spots. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's .......
