Britten was so remarkably prolific as a young composer that many of the works from his teens were put aside to await revision or completion as he rushed on to the next piece. This was particularly the case around the time of his Opus 1 Sinfonietta , composed in the summer of 1932, his second year as a student at the Royal College Of Music. The Sinfonietta was written (in less than three weeks) very soon after Britten had completed the first draft of the Double Concerto - but after finishing the Sinfonietta he went back to revise the Concerto's second movement. He started work on his Op.2 Phantasy for Oboe and String Trio a few weeks later. Although the Concerto follows the same three-movement pattern as the Sinfonietta , it is more ambitious in scale - and since the sketch is, unusually for Britten, complete in practically every detail, it is puzzling that he never made a full score of the work after finishing the composition, and seems to have made no attempt to get it performed. It is not clear if he had particular performers in mind (he was, of course, a Viola player, although he is not likely to have intended the part for himself). He showed the work to his composition teacher at the college, John Ireland, who, as Britten recorded in his diary, was 'pretty pleased' with it - but it is distinctly possible that his experience in rehearsing the Sinfonietta with a student orchestra in 1932 ('I have never heard such an appalling row!' reads another diary entry) discouraged him from going on to complete the Double Concerto in score. He was not to hear any of his orchestral works until the first performance of Our Hunting Fathers in 1936. In the absence of Britten's full score it was necessary for me to prepare the work from the sketch. But the instrumentation is so carefully indicated in the draft that the resulting score is not far from being 100% Britten - only between bars 70 and 74 of the slow movement did there seem to be any need to add anything significant to Britten's texture. The Double Concerto (Britten's manuscript title was 'Concerto In B Minor', but he referred to it in his diary, in characteristic shorthand, as '2ble Concerto') is the most recent addition to his corpus of works, mostly dating from Britten's youth and early maturity, that, since his death, have been revived after many years, or performed for the first time. Britten himself occasionally returned to his early works, and in his last years revised both the early String Quartet In D of 1931 and the opera Paul Bunyan . The Piano score published separately is not a reduction from the orchestral score, but a transcription of Britten's composition sketch, including his indications of instrumentation. The first performance of the Double Concerto was given at the 50th Aldeburgh Festival by Katherine Hunka and Philip Dukes, with the Britten-Pears Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano, on June 15th 1997. -Colin Matthews / Violon, Alto Et Piano

I gave many hours of thought to solving this challenge and eventually settled on an obvious mission: make each instrument as independent from the other as possible. Explore opposite areas of each range simultaneously. Set very different contours against one another in the solo parts. These kinds of things.I. Bach in the Fifties sets the soloists up as competing crooners. I wanted to write a 1950s-style teen idol tune, complete with electric organ, and writing the music I imagined J.S. Bach might tend towards if he was writing for The Platters or Perry Como. This first movement also presents within it a traditional concerto-style cadenza for both soloists together.II. Desert Arias should transport the listener to an arid, barren land over which a mirage of canons emerge.III. Pronouncements is set in the style of a baroque concerto’s final movement. Nuance is forfeited on behalf of straight-ahead melodic dueling. Stravinsky lingers like a ghost behind this finale.

The composer states that her Cello Concerto is antithetical to her other concertos. “While in the concertos for violin and piano, in the Double Concerto, and in my new sheng concerto I was seeking to merge the solo instrument and the orchestra into a single virtuoso super-instrument, here its all about the competitive tension between the soloist and the orchestra. The 'aura' of the cello was the initial nucleus and forms the basis of the music, so the whole structure of the piece is thus 'carried' by the cello. However, the orchestra responds to it in an antagonistic way. This antagonism is much stronger than in traditional Classical-Romantic concertos; one could even speak of a 'psychological warfare' between soloist and orchestra. In my cello writing, I often ask the soloist to disguise the nature of the instrument so the perception can be blurred. I try to explore the boundaries of the cellos expressivity and to broaden the definition of 'expression'. Therefore I also use special playing techniques and call for unusual timbres, including noises and rasping sounds. For me, this actually serves the expressivity by suggesting new meanings. The unique artistry of Alban Gerhardt inspired me immensely. Not only his solo part but also the orchestral parts are often characterized by extreme virtuosity, by the idea of the instrumentalists being pushed to the edge.”.

A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano, organ, accordion, trombone, tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours.While on military service, the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar.He already started writing musical arrangements as a student, and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride and Bugler�s Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work, Blue Tango, reached number one in the US charts in 1952, and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975, a year after hisdeath, he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.Most of his works last no longer than three minutes, about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra.The first performance was in Chicago, conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However, after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it, but never got round to it.
