The entire four movements of Henry Eccles’ Sonata in G Minor for ViolonCello and Piano remain in the key of G minor with many long expressive phrases and some moments of fleet-fingered delight.Henry Eccles was a Violinist and composer of the Baroque era who was a musician to King William and Queen Mary and a member of the Royal Band of Queen Anne. The Duke d’Aumont brought him to Paris where he entered the service of King Louis XIV. In 1720 Eccles published a book of sonatas for Violin and figured bass from which renowned English composer Malcolm Lipkin has created this arrangement for ‘Cello and Piano.

The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008). Au début des années 1870, Saint-Saëns appréciait tout particulièrement le violoncelle. Sa première Sonate pour violoncelle fut achevée en décembre 1872, juste après son premier Concerto pour violoncelle (voir HN 711). La tonalité de ut mineur, mais surtout l'intensité dramatique de l'oeuvre ne sont pas sans rappeler Beethoven. Exceptionnelle à plus d'un égard, cette sonate exigeante et par moments très virtuose fut rapidement reconnue à sa juste valeur par la critique et le public, de sorte qu'elle ne tarda pas à figurer au répertoire. Notre édition Urtext tient pour la première fois compte de toutes les sources existantes.
