Lord Berners (1883-1950) was one of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating personalities in British music. He became a pioneer in the avant-garde when he wrote his first music whilst living in Rome as adiplomat during World War 1; Balanchine choreographed his first two ballets and Ashton the next three; in 1931 he had the first exhibition of his paintings; in 1934 he published the first volume of his autobiography, FirstChildhood, and two years later his first novel, The Camel -- and three more novels came out in 1941. On top of all this during the 1930s, known as 'the versatile peer', he increasingly gained a reputation as an eccentric,which he realised was good for publicity.A wry humour pervades everything, as in these three sets of piano duets. Berners' songs and piano music, too, are as full of whimsical references as those of Erik Satie -- he hasbeen called the English Satie and the Ronald Firbank of music. Berners was not prolific but whatever he did was stamped with his own fastidious accomplishment. He may not have been the last eccentric but his music, writingand painting combine to make him one of the most rewarding.

The fourth volume of the Lieder und Chorwerke (Songs and Choral Works) from the Reger Hybrid Edition of Works (RWA) presents songs Max Reger composed between November 1903 and July 1905. In his Opus 75 songs, Reger set verses by classic German poets, such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as folksong texts in his usual avant-garde manner. In the 30 songs from the first two collections of the Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, on the other hand, the composer distanced himself from his previous approach to songwriting by adopting a simpler, folk-like style. The popular Schlichte Weisen were also a concession to his publishers' wishes. The songs in Opus 88 were published not by Lauterbach & Kuhn but by Simrock, a firm more willing to accept music that departed from Alltagsgeschmack (everyday or popular taste). The four songs were dedicated to the mezzo-soprano Lula Mysz-Gmeiner.In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA), supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. Rhei nberger's popularity during his lifetime was based, for the most part, on his secular choral music. His cycles for men's and women's choir, most of which were commissioned works, are contained in two volumes of the Complete Edition (vols. 19 and 20). Among this music there are humorous songs and drinking songs, idyllic settings of texts drawn from nature, and songs in a folk-like idiom which are light and easily performable, as well as several more ambitious compositions which were written for choral competitions in Rheinberger's day.
