Bach's first cantata for the election of the Leipzig town council, composed in August 1723, is one of his most splendidly scored work from his Leipzig period. The choice of opening, with the representative form of a French overture, was suited to a festive orchestral scoring. Two choral movements frame a middle section which consists of two arias and a recitativo accompagnato with a trumpet ritornello. The conclusion of this extended festive music takes a reflective turn in movements 8 and 9, when Bach allows a recitative to be followed by simple, prayer-like chorale movement. The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach reverted to a proven model: The four voices of the solo ensemble take over the chorale, in which the melody lies in the soprano. For stanzas 2-4 Bach chooses the aria form with a highly differentiated scoring from movement to movement, ranging from a continuo Aria (1st movement), up to an aria accompanied by the violin, with obbligato bassoon and continuo. A straightforward four-part chorale movement concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3117700.

Bach's cantata BWV 26 belongs to the Leipzig cycle of chorale cantatas, 1724/25, and it was first performed on 19 November 1724. The underlying 13-vers hymn by Michael Franck provided Bach and his unidentified librettist with an abundance of metaphors and comparisons which, from verse to verse and movement to movement, illustrate the fleeting and transitory nature of earthly life: an impressive musical-poetic exposition of potent baroque pictures of vanity.. The cantata O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad (O Holy spirit's solemn rite) BWV 165 is one of Bach's earliest cantata compositions and was presumably first performed in the Weimar Schlosskirche for Trinity Sunday in 1715. With a simple instrumentation of only strings and basso continuo (including bassoon), the cantata offers an alternative to the later Leipzig cantatas for the Feast of the Holy Trinity, also with regard to the vivid interpretation of the text in the librettos by Salomon Franck. In the two expressive recitatives and the three distinctively different arias, Bach repeatedly emphasizes the central words of the text, which focuses on the meaning of the rebirth of the spirit through baptism. In 1729 Bach took over the running of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, founded by Telemann, and continued the tradition of giving concerts at least once a week with this ensemble in Zimmermann's coffee house or, in the summer, in the coffee garden there. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here?

As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3113000.

Bach wrote the cantata Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn as a test piece in connection with his application for the position of Cantor of St. Thomas. For reasons unknown, Bach considered it necessary to use a cornett and three trombones to support the chorus - possibly this suggests the poor state of the St. Thomas choir after Kuhnau's death. New revised edition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3102300.

The cantata Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren BWV 154 was first performed on 9 January 1724, the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. The structure and extent of the work are unusual: it comprises eight, instead of the usual six movements. With a duration of around 15 minutes, it is a concise work. As well as this, at the beginning of the cantata there is an aria instead of the usual opening chorus. A chorale features at the end and in the third movement. Its brevity and straightforward arias make this cantata suitable for inclusion in any church service, and is easy for amateur ensembles to master. Score available separately - see item CA.3115400.

Although Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz (What is it troubles thee, my heart) BWV 138 is based on the chorale of the same name, it is nevertheless not regarded as one of Bach's chorale cantatas. In this unusual composition from Bach's first cycle of cantatas, further chorale verses were not paraphrased in the freely-composed sections (as in the chorale cantatas). Instead the chorale occurs in dialog with the recitatives. It assumes the role of the comforter, whilst doubts are expressed through the recitatives. This leads to recitative and chorale being merged into larger movements. In the only aria in the cantata, trust in God finally prevails. The cantata ends with a final chorale verse; in the interludes between the lines, Bach ignites a roaring virtuoso firework display.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3101800.

It's about 200 years since Beethoven scribbled down a theme in D minor in his sketch book, which he later used, slightly altered, in the 2nd movement of his 9th Symphony. Beethoven had thought of setting Schiller's Ode to Joy much earlier. As early as 1803 Ferdinand Ries mentioned a complete setting of the text by Beethoven which no longer survives. The vocal score of the finale of the 9th Symphony is based on the vocal score made by Carl Reinecke around the end of the 19th century. The version by Reinecke, popular worldwide, closely reflects the sound of the orchestral writing, yet at the same time is remains playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this historic vocal score, in the process taking into account recent research findings. The new Carus vocal score contains rehearsal letters from all current versions of the orchestral material, and is thus compatible with all available music editions. In the presentation of this edition, particular attention has been paid to the practical needs of (choral) singers and repetiteurs.

Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. The heroic bass aria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms a weighty counterpart to the opening movement. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104200.

The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Score available separately - see item CA.3118600.

Composed in the late period, around 1740 A lively discussion about the choral movement Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft has been carried on, in which not only all previous assumptions have been called into question-including Bach's authorship-but also show how little we know about the history of this magnificent movement. Even though there is little to refute the 1982 presumption that the work was handed down in the form of an arrangement, the question remains open concerning the identity of the arranger, as well as the alleged form of the original design. Therefore it seemed appropriate to forego any attempts at reconstruction. Rather, for the present new edition the music has been critically examined and commented upon based on the surviving copy from Bach's circle. Score available separately - see item CA.3105000.

After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at the end of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata texts by the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this work to the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria Auf,auf, mit hellem Schall with solo trumpet is note-worthy since in place of a middle section in the aria, here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative. In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3114900.
