In April 1814 he could finally give the work its première together with Ignaz Schuppanzigh and Joseph Linke, this being Beethoven?s last public appearance as a pianist. Par SAURET EMILE. Émile Sauret, violin virtuoso, teacher and composer, was admired by some of the greatest composers of his time, including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Wagner, Grieg and Mahler. He gave numerous concerts with Liszt, Rubinstein, and Moszkowski, and often played duets with Sarasate. He is predominantly remembered for the fiendishly difficult cadenza he composed to Paganini?s first violin concerto. Sauret?s 24 Etudes Caprices for solo violin are a substantial virtuoso journey through every major and minor key. Written while he was a professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, they are notable for the exceptional variety of filigree detail and variation in nuance, dynamic, fingering, bowing and phrasing, creating etudes far more substantial than is typical in this genre. Unavailable since their first publication early in the 20th century, the Etudes Caprices are edited by leading violinist and Sauret specialist, Nazrin Rashidova, who has made the first complete recording of the Etudes Caprices, performing them on Sauret?s own Stradivarius. Using the original Simrock edition as a basis, this edition supplements Sauret?s original bowings and fingerings with Rashidova?s own suggestions. The edition is based on the autograph and is equipped with an apparatus of critical notes: they indicate problems with the reading of the original source, suggest possible new solutions, alternative to the widely accepted ones, and retrace the history of harmonic perception, as evidenced by the changes the composition went through across all its historical editions. The curator provides indications (clearly distinguishable from the original source) for the performance, the bowings specifically. Since Beethoven?s death it has often been interpreted as an attempt to take wise and positive stock of the mishaps that had befallen him in the preceding years regarding his life situation, family and health. This interpretation is strongly suggested by the final movement, ?Der schwer gefasste Entschluss? (The Difficult Decision), with its motto ?Must it be? It must be! It must be!? The editing of this quartet proved especially complex, for the authentic sources were reworked at various stages by the composer. Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions.
