Many well-known violinists such as the dedicatee Pablo de Sarasate, together later with Eugene Ysaye and Jacques Thibaud, included in their repertoires Camille Saint-Saens' concert piece composed in 1863. Even today, concert life is hard to imagine without the Introduction et Rondo capriccioso. The highly virtuosic work already inspired critics and audiences during the composer's lifetime; reported about the premiere in 1867 was: The Introduction and the Rondo capriccioso for the same instrument are both original and charming, and Maestro Sarasate, who was in his element here, admirably made the most of it. And a few years later, a music critic described the work as a kind of fantasy waltz in the Spanish style and with a most bewitching effect. After the first performances in 1867, despite success, the work's score and orchestral parts had little chance of publication due to concert companies' reluctance. In 1869 the Paris publishing house G. Hartmann merely published an arrangement for violin and piano produced by the composer's friend Georges Bizet. The orchestral score and parts were first published after the Paris publishing house Durand had acquired publication rights in 1875. The present edition published in collaboration with the G. Henle Verlag is the first critical edition of the work.

Richard Strauss composed his second horn concerto about 60 years after his first horn concerto, having recently considered that his actual creativity had come to an end with his opera Capriccio. The late work was just a wrist exercise and not by any means intended for publication during his lifetime, though it does not reveal the depressing circumstances of its genesis during World War II. In the key of E-flat major, with the classic three movements including a rondo finale, the concerto has is a reminiscence of its earlier sister work and seems like a nostalgic retrospect of his youth from an almost 80-year-old Strauss. Hans Pizka, editor of this work's first Urtext edition, has experienced the performance tradition and history of this concerto at first hand, both as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg, soloist of the world premiere, and also as the former solo hornist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

The Violin Concerto, written in 1928, is one of Egk's most significant instrumental works. It is indicative of the contemporary climate of innovation as reflected in the development of new genres for chamber orchestra, ensembles and soloists, as for example in Hindemith's chamber music pieces, Weill's Concerto for Violin and Woodwind, Berg's Chamber Concerto, and the Concerto and Capriccio by Stravinsky. The chamber orchestra with 16 players was considered a type of instrumentation appropriately contemporary for variety of uses and was frequently referred to in contemporary literature and discussions on Neo-classicism, Neue Sachlichkeit, functional music, music for radio, etc.
