I do not regard it as 14 variations: it is rather 14 different versions like 14 flowers grown from the same musical seed. Beethoven?s three sets of cello variations comprise the ?Twelve Variations on a Theme from H?ndel?s Oratorio ?Judas Maccabeus?? (WoO 45) the ?Twelve Variations on the theme ?Ein M?dchen oder Weibchen?? (op.66) from Mozart?s opera ?Die Zauberfl?te? and the ?Seven Variations on the duet ?Bei M?nnern welche Liebe f?hlen?? (WoO 46) also from ?Die Zauberfl?te?.These works have existed in many different editions some of which have from time to time been (tacitly) reprinted with corrections to keep up to date with the latest scholarship. Variation form occupied Beethoven throughout his composing career. This first volume of G. Henle Publishers? two-volume edition of all his piano variations includes works from Beethoven?s time in Bonn as well as his early years inVienna composed between 1783 and 1799. Beethoven mostly took his themes from arias or songs from stage works that were popular at the time. Besides offering simple figurations around the melodic lines he also made more radicalvariations of his chosen material pointing the way forward to his future ?character variations?. The musical text of this Urtext edition has been completely revised on the basis of the critical report of the Beethoven CompleteEdition. There is also a detailed preface and commentary.
