The First World War

Billy Bennett (1887-1942) was a British comedian who specialised in comic monologues. He was born into the music hall industry and after a decorated spell in the Army during the First World War he began his own successful stage career in 1919. Often billed as Almost a Gentleman he shot to fame at the 1926 Royal Command Performance (now the Royal Variety Shows) and remained a popular public figure for over a decade. The First Budget Of Burlesque Monologues is the first volume of the collected monologues that were written performed and broadcast by Billy Bennett during the 1920s and 1930s.

He has premiered his original music at the First World Cello Congress the American Cello Congress and the New Directions Cello Festival. Selections from his published collections are now considered standard repertoire appearing in the curriculums of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and the American String Teachers Association. Particularly known for bridging the gap between classical and popular music for cello Minsky founded the Von Cello Band the first cello-fronted rock power trio which features a unique blend of hard alternative and jam rock.

Reduced Version-The Full Score of Eventide the epic composition inspired by the story of Edith Cavell compiled from texts relating to her imprisonment composed by the great Patrick Hawes. This is the reduced version scored for Soprano SATB Chorus Unison Semi-Chorus Trumpet Harp Organ and Strings. This work is dedicated to Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Gresham's Holt who first performed this work in Norwich Cathedral on the 12th of July 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.  Lasting around 45 minutes this large-scale work has the subtitle 'In Memoriam Edith Cavell' who is commemorated here as a nurse to German and British wounded who went on to provide refuge to escaped and lost British soldiers who were enabled by her to return to England. As a result of this she was arrested for 'treason' and condemned to death. While in prison her only possessions were her Bible her Book of Common Prayer and a copy of the Imitation of Christ. The libretto as compiled by Andrew Hawes is made up of extracts from these books as well as other materials relating to her final days.  This tribute to a brave and courageous life is fitting for a composition commemorating the First World War. The tragedy and pathos surrounding Cavell's life is hard for us to understand but by placing words so personal to her in the context of a piece of beautiful music it forces us to think and remember while also condemning the actions of so many figures of authority on an innocent and pious nurse during that horrific period. 

Gordon Jacob was born in Upper Norwood South London in 1895 a tenth child and a seventh son. He was educated at Dulwich College which was an unusually musical school and he wrote his first orchestral pieces there. During the First World War he was captured by the Germans near Arras and in his prison camp organised a small orchestra whose entire repertoire he arranged or composed. This early practical approach to music was to remain a hallmark and his musicis always eminently ‘playable’. After the war having decided against a career in journalism he entered the Royal College of Music where he studied composition with Stanford Howells and Vaughan Williams conducting with Boult and piano withThalben Ball. Two of his books Orchestral Technique and How to Read a Score are still much used and highly valued by students throughout the English-speaking world. He died in 1984.

The Prelude de Profundis is excerpted from two sets of Preludes Howells composed for Organ of which this is the first of the second set. Entirely different in mood from the nervous energy of the Rhapsody Prelude de Profundis expresses the call ‘from the depths’.Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation.He left a body of distinguished Organ music of which these two works are fine examples. Howells’s first three rhapsodies for Organ were published together during the years of the first World War. It was not until forty years later that Howells returned to the form until although it shares many structural similarities with the earlier works.

Par FERRARIO PIETRO. Jubilate Deo was written an June 2002, and dedicated by the composer to his Ensemble vocale Calycanthus. The first world performance took place in Italy at Isola Vicentina – Santuario di S. Maria del Cengio, by the Ensemble vocale Calycanthus, on May 2003, 10th. The piece was unanimously awarded the first prize at the International Trophy of Choral Composition “C. A. Seghizzi” 2004 at Gorizia [Italy], and was performed during the prestigious final of the European Choral Grand Prix 2004 by Ars Cantica Choir. The motet has a great rhythmic vivacity, with rich and colourful harmonies. It has a simple structure A-B-A’. The contrasting central section is more meditative, with manysolos, and echoes from Gregorian chant. The final section is a shortened and varied recapitulation of the first one, treated with increasing energy, exaltation and harmonic surprise. / Musique contemporaine / Répertoire / Choeur SSAATTBB

This work for mixed voices and organ setting text from the First Epistle of St John and Psalm 107 was commissioned by the Department for Digital Culture Media and Sport for a Service to commemorate the centenary of the end ofthe First World War held in Westminster Abbey on 11th November 2018 and first performed by the Choir of Westminster Abbey with Peter Holder (organ) conducted by James O'Donnell. (Four Cities)-Faz?l Say?s ?Four Cities? Sonata can be considered as a journey through four cities of Anatolia. This work has taken its inspiration from Faz?l Say?s memories and events of his life. Bodrum is well known as a city greatly frequented by tourists which sets it apart from the other three locations. These four very different cities with their individual cultures have been selected from the nearly 2000-km wide expanse of Anatolia. SivasSivas is a conservative city located in Eastern Anatolia which is known for its large Alevi population. As¸?k Veysel is an Alevi Ozan (poet) and Faz?l Say has been inspired by his song ?Saz?m? (my saz/myinstrument) in the first part of this work. The movement is concluded on a melancholy tone in imitation of this ethnic instrument. HopaA traditional wedding provided Faz?l Say with his inspiration for this second movement which embraces Eastern Black Sea culture. Horon is a very fast folk dance in 7/16 time which is played on the kemence a typical instrument of the Eastern Black Sea region. The music also touches on Caucasian Georgian and Laz dances anonymous songs ?Laz women? and ?Cilveloy nanayda? (a Turkish song). AnkaraAnkara was declared the capital city of Turkey by Atatürk in 1923. This city with its population of four million was where the composer was born and also spent his childhood. ?Ankara?n?n Tas¸?na Bak? a rebellious song dating back to the First World War can be discerned in the mournful middle section. The movement with its atmosphere of tragedy evokes the republican spirit and the ambience of former times. BodrumBodrum is universally known as the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. A famous street in the city is fringed with countless bars and pubs from which a cacophony of different music can be heard ranging from jazz pop and rock to folk songs. Composer Herbert Howells is most widely known for the church music he wrote toward the later part of his career though his secular works are undoing a much-deserved revaluation. But this work for baritone Voice Violin Cello and Organ dates from a much earlier stage of his life. Howells had suffered severe ill health in 1917 just at the time Babylon was written and had withdrawn from his first appointment at Salisbury Cathedral. It was also the time he wrote his Elegy full of loss and transience composed in memory of a friend killed in the First World War.The dramatic even operatic scale of emotion in By the Waters of Babylon brings the anguish of the piece right tothe fore. It is definitely a Howells composition underpinned by solid structure and displaying chromatic sensuousness. The words are one of the great lamentations and Howells has enhanced their effect in this mighty work.

Bridge’s early works those written before the first World War were more late Romantic in style warmly expansive than his mature works. The Lament for Two Violas was written for himself and Lionel Tertis to perform at Wigmore Hall in March 1912. There were originally two pieces Caprice and Lament of which the first has been lost. Paul Hindmarsh has edited this sheet music from sketches and drafts.It is a deeply felt work interweaving the near-human Voices of the Violas into a work that is more thoughtful than grief-stricken yet no less effective for that.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respectedconductor violist and teacher his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge based on a theme from one of Bridge’s pieces for String quartet.
