On his return to civilian life after five years Army service in the First World War, Vaughan Williams revised some pre-war works, such as The Lark Ascending and his opera Hugh the Drover , and embarked on new compositions - the Pastoral Symphony , the one-act Bunyan episode The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains and the Mass in G minor - all of which have outwardly in common a serene tranquillity. But beneath the surface, especially of the symphony, is a requiem-like mood, a legacy of the war. This ambiguity can also be sensed in the three songs -or rondels - for voice and string trio which he called Merciless Beauty. The texts are attributed to Chaucer./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

L?histoire de la genèse de la 4e Symphonie remonte probablement aux années 1870, alors que Brahms travaillait sur la cantate de Bach «Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich», dont le thème de la chaconne préfigure la cellule du final.

Autour du 29 août 1885, Brahms écrivit à Hans von Bülow depuis Mürzzuschlag dans le Steiermark: «J?ai là quelques entr?actes ? ce que l?on a coutume de réunir sous le nom de symphonie. [?] Je crains [?] qu?elle a le goût du climat local ? ici les cerises ne mûrissent pas.» Aucune trace de cerises «amères» dans cette symphonie. L?oeuvre est aujourd?hui un des sommets de la symphonie classique-romantique.

Shawn Okpebholo?s Heritage, in the Edition Peters Concert Band Series, evokes moods, events and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit the composer undertook to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes of the work is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe to which the composer has deep historical and family ties. The Esan language is poetic in nature and, at various moments in the work, the musicians chant the text from an Esan song: Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo (My investment in you is paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright). Heritage is a revised version of a work previously entitled This is Africa, which was commissioned by Professor Marcellus Brown and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds for the 2011 National CBDNA Convention and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Harry Begian. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Il entre dans le détail organique de la forme, de la cadence, du développement, des relations diagonales qui jalonnent le déroulé des oeuvres. Il nous fait comprendre l?importance des dissonances et des fausses-relations qui viennent se greffer dans les progressions harmoniques. L?auteur approche les caractéristiques du rythme dans le contexte de l?élan de la direction rythmique et de la polyrythmie. À travers sa grande expérience du jeu, l?interprète nous propose en toute modestie ses idéaux d?interprétation et prend bien soin de nous dire que l?interprétation reste tout de même ouverte aux époques et au ressenti de chaque interprète et qu?il n?y a heureusement pas d?interprétation authentique, ni d?interprétation définitive. Le pouvoir miraculeux du Clavier bien tempéré, comme d?ailleurs beaucoup d?autres oeuvres, a été de survivre à son époque et à son contexte, de s?adapter aux interprétations du moment. This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. The work begins with an atmospheric medieval picture of the Convent of St Agnes the nunnery that was built in the first half of the 15th century. We hear the sound of the convent bells together with an upward motif which will reappear later in the work. Next the rest of Elburg is featured including the fortress - from which the bells of the Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church) are ringing. Then cheerful sounds can be heard at the Vischpoort (Fish Gate) where a dancing group is performing a 16th century French folk dance (a branle des chevaux). We also hear old wagons rumbling over the town’scobble stones. Trade made this Hanseatic town a lively place. The repetitive upward motif first heard in the introduction now develops into a more distinct feature reflecting the mercantile spirit of the town residents.Then follows the slow middle movement in which the clock has been turned back to the time when Elburg was still lying on the Zuiderzee (which was a bay of the North Sea) and was struggling with floods. After the second St. Marcellus Flood (1362) and the water flood of 1367 it was decided that the town would be relocated. We now hear the theme of branle des chevaux in a minor key followed by a death bell sounding in remembrance of the drowned citizens of the former town. Back in our own time a slow expressive theme in Baroque style mirrors Elburg’s tranquil places such as the Feithenhof (Feithen Court) and the Weduwenhofje (Widow Court). Then the bustle returns with motifs from the introduction followed by an attractive theme in which present-day Elburg is portrayed with its many tourists. Now suddenly there is an echo from the past depicting the dramatic floods and wars that once plagued the town. This leads to the grand closing theme: branle des chevaux is heard for a final time from the perspective of the historic town centre.

The inspiration for this work came from the novel Silence by the great Japanese writer Sh saku End (1923 96). His book asks profound philosophical questions and resonates with one of the most anguished questions asked 2 000 years ago ???My God my God why have you abandoned me'??? End ???s ???silence??? is the silence of God in the face of terrible events springing from the merciless nature of man: torture genocide holocaust. For End though this silence is not absence but presence a notion that has many musical analogies. The emptiness and solitude of a composer???s silence is nevertheless pregnant with the promise of possibility and potency. The connections between music andsilence are made palpable in this single-movement symphony; the work begins in silence and the climax is a prolonged fermata. The final event is a bar of silence the conception and metaphorical point of the entire work.

While each Volume can be played by any mix of instruments built in the same key, the two volumes are compatible when instruments using the treble clef book are B-flat instruments, such as trumpets, cornets, or baritone treble clef.
