No. 3 from The Same Flame-Commissioned by the Somerset England based charity Churchill Music! The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All fivemovements of The Same Flame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Inspired by the title of a book by Mary Ann Radmacher ‘Courage doesn’t always roar’ Guts and Grace considers courage and determination as essentially private qualities mothered by dark necessity but on occasion needing to step up publicly especially in the sporting arena and ‘roar’. This movement is intense and charged with emotion and gives opportunity for sections of the choir to shine individually as well as a beautiful soaring soprano solo section in the middle.

While spelling out the ‘doggedness diligence discipline [and] drudgery’ that go into achieving ‘poetry in motion’ the song also celebrates the attainment of those who achieve excellence and comes to the inescapable conclusion that the ‘unbegrudged drudgery’ is worth it! The (sometime tongue-twisting) language is very colourful and engaging and as the final movement of “The Same Flame” the music is equally exciting and explosive.

The Veil of the Temple is a journey from darkness into light. Care and attention has been given to the key chosen for each anthem and to the voicings so that these versions are attractive to the broadest possiblerange of amateur as well as professional singers. The breathtakingly simple Mother Of God here I stand and the quietly ecstatic Awed by the Beauty are for unaccompanied chorus. The remaining three anthems are scoredwith Organ accompaniment: the sonorous You mantle yourself in light; the contemplative What God is we do not know and the radiant O Mary Theotokos.

You Raise Me Up is a beautiful song which has been recorded and performed by many artists - most famously including Josh Groban. This is a superb choral version of this popular song arranged for Upper Voices (SSA) with Piano Accompaniment. With simple yet effective harmonies lyrical melody lines and a well voiced and interesting piano accompaniment this piece truly is a wonderful arrangement of the classic song.
