Terri Lyne Carrington, Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, has curated a wide range of jazz compositions written by women composers, from obscure to popular, historic to current, blues to be bebop, and beyond in this important collection. These compositions are supplementary and alternatives to the jazz standard canon that has served students, teachers and professionals throughout the development of jazz music. The compositions span nearly a century, including Lil Hardin Armstrong's work from 1922 to songs written in 2021 by recent Institute graduates. It features 101 compositions from a remarkable range of acknowledged titans, young visionaries and unsung heroes in jazz: Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, esperanza spalding, Geri Allen, Maria Schneider, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Dorothy Ashby, Nubya Garcia, Nicole Mitchell and many others. Par MACMILLAN JAMES. A setting of passages from the Book of Revelation, with particular reference to the angels who appear with seven trumpet blasts, heralding a series of apocalyptic scenes. Commissioned by Jeffrey Skidmore, director of Ex Cathedra, and first performed by them at Birmingham Town Hall in 2015. The composer states, ?There is a vividness and strangeness in these dramatic texts, which are endlessly fascinating and disturbing. The instruments used here are based on the various instrumental types mentioned throughout scripture ? trumpets, harp, bells, cymbals, tabor, rebec.? These are scored for mostly in their modern forms, but shofars (Jewish ritual temple trumpets) and early trumpets are also used. The choral writing shows a similar contrast between traditional and contemporary scoring, with polyphony and homophony alongside extended vocal techniques, including Sprechstimme. Leading choral director Paul Spicer comments, ?This is an extremely dramatic work which draws the listener into the apocalyptic story line ? This setting of eight short poems by American poet Emily Dickinson, each exploring her relationship to the sea, is not narrative, but instead alternates philosophical meditations on the sea (Songs 1, 3, 5 8) with more immediate \'encounters\': a surreal walk with the sea (Song 2), two near drownings (Songs 4 5) and a river\'s almost erotic desire to join the ocean (Song 8). 1. for Soprano and Piano. Par LEFANU NICOLA. The Moth-Ghost by Nicola LeFanu is a 10-minute dramatic scena for soprano and piano, setting a poem by James Harpur. The work tells the story of Thetis, a sea-goddess of Greek mythology, who knew that her son Achilles must die. In the poem, she is a grief-stricken mother, mourning his death in the Trojan war. The imagery of the poem and the music is of the sea: the sonority of its turbulence, the rhythm of its tides. L\'histoire de Peter Pan - surtout connue à travers la lecture simplificatrice du dessin animé de Walt Disney - se révèle, dans le conte originel de James Matthew Barrie, une étonnante parabole sur l\'existence et sur la mort. L\'opéra renforce la mise en abîme et le jeu sur l\'éternel retour en mettant en scène la perte prématurée du frère de Wendy qui n\'est autre que Peter, rejoint par elle dans l\'au-delà : le Neverland. Trois mondes alternent sur la scène, selon des techniques assez cinématographiques (flash-backs, fondus, transitions abruptes). Le premier, l\'axe central, met en présence deux actrices : Wendy, aujourd\'hui grand-mère, raconte son histoire à sa petite fille Lucie, avec toutes les déformations et contradictions dues peut-être moins à son âge qu\'à sa mythomanie. Les deuxième et troisième mondes sont l\'illustration de son propos, les images vivantes de son souvenir : la chambre de son enfance, où les voix sont parlées mais cette fois-ci calées rythmiquement avec l\'orchestre, et le Pays imaginaire quant à lui entièrement chanté. La présence de la musique est donc proportionnelle à la distance prise avec le réel, puisque les actrices parlent (ici et maintenant), les solistes parlent sur l\'orchestre (le souvenir), solistes et choeurs chantent où tout n\'est plus que musique (le rêve... l\'Ailleurs !). Sirènes, fées, pirates, indiens, bêtes sauvages - disputes familiales, perte des enfants - nostalgie du regard sur son passé, etc. De la réflexion sur l\'enfance éternelle (seule la vie peut offrir le vieillissement) jusqu\'aux batailles les plus spectaculaires, puisse cet opéra - à l\'instar du conte de James Matthew Barrie - s\'ouvrir à tous les niveaux de lecture.
