First performed in 1950 at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia The Consul was a phenomenally successful opera dealing with 20th century bureaucracy and socio-political issues. It is set in a totalitarian state in which John Sorel is a political dissident fighting for a democratic government. The secret police force him to leave the country and Magda his wife must obtain a visa to leave the country and join him. During the ensuing months Magda's baby and mother-in-law die and then she learns that her husband is coming home to free her despite the fact that he will be captured on his return. The Consul is a powerful and thought-provokingmusical drama in three acts by Gian-Carlo Menotti. Puccini's 'La Boheme' is based on Henri Murger's novel Scènes de la vie de bohème which draws it's inspiration from the Bohemian lifestyle which was somewhat in vogue in Paris at the time. This Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica runs as follows: Rodolfo?s neighbour in his garret Mimi knocks at the door saying her candle has gone out on the stairs. Rodolfo and Mimi sit in the dark talking and fall for each other. They go to meet Rodolfo?s friends. While there Marcello's former lover Musetta arrives with her new husband Alcindoro but distracting him falls into Marcello's arms. Some time later Mimì pours out her distress to Marcello over Rodolfo'sincessant jealousy Rodolfo is actually concerned about Mimi?s poor health and wants to part with her. On realising this the two decide to stay together until spring Marcello and Musetta meanwhile part when she is unfaithful.Some months later Rodolfo Marcello and friends are amusnig themselves in the garret when Musetta bursts in saying Mimi is downstairs and has begged to be taken to her lover to die. Long neglected and misunderstood 'Cosi Fan Tutte' (Thus Do All Women) emerged from obscurity in the twentieth century and has come to be regarded as among Mozart's finest works. The Libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte and tells of two friends Ferrando and Guglielmo who wager with Don Alfonso that their lovers Fiordiligi and Dorabella will remain constant in their absence. To prove the point they depart under false pretences and return as 'Albanians' to try to woo the women away. Each of the six characters receives an equally insightful musical portrayal for example Fiordiligi transcends her role as the victim of cruel manipulation revealing a complex personality that issincere capable of growth and inarguably sympathetic. In contrast Guglielmo never progresses beyond concern for his own ego and interests; his music therefore remains within the stock traditions of opera buffa. The ambigous nature of the ending (who actually loves whom?) can be seen as appropriate given the emotional issues aired during the drama. Tchaikovsky wrote Eugene Onegin in 1878 using a libretto by Konstantin Shilovsky based on the epic poem by Pushkin. Flirtatious Olga and shy bookish Tatyana are sisters Olga being happily engaged to Lenski. One day Lenski arrives with a friend Eugene Onegin and Tatyana is smitten. She writes him a letter but he rudely rebuffs her and she is devastated. At the dance that night he dances with Olga making Lenski jealous also. They fight a duel in which Lenski is killed.Six years later Tatyana has become a beauty and married Prince Gremin unbeknownst to Onegin who has become a wanderer. Onegin enters Gremin’s house for a party seesTatyana falls in love and pleads with her to come with him but Tatyana though confessing she still loves him refuses him she is married.
