Evelyn Rothwell (1911-2008) was a British musician who was considered one of the best oboists of her generation. She arranged Two Songs by Mozart for Oboe and Piano in 1969.Das Lied DerTrennung (?Song of Separation? K. 519) was written in 1787 for Male Voice and Piano setting a text by Klamer Eberhard Karl Schmidt. Set in a minor key it explores the feelings of angst and pain created as two lovers areseparated. Un Moto Di Gioia Mi Sento (?I feel a surge of Joy? K. 579) by contrast is a much happier piece. It was written in 1789 when Mozart was revising his famous opera?The Marriage of Figaro and was originally written as a Soprano Aria.

Composer's NoteSecond Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren oboe and Stefan Bojsten piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuosoduos 'meetings'. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord.Formally Second Meeting is very close to a familiar 'theme and variations' category although there are seven themes or melodies all quiteclosely related.In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel perhaps). Written the year before his death and dedicated to the memory of Sergey Prokofiev this piece is the last of Poulenc's wind sonatas and is a work of profound poignancy and delicacy. Poulenc would not live to see the piece tofruition as the work was published posthumously. This is the 2004 updated and revised version edited by Millan Sachania.
