Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.

Césa r Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psyché, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoseswritten in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psyché et Érosis positioned at the end of the second part. Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.

“As a famous contributor to classical Organ music, César Franck's (1822-1890) catalogue is extensive. Moreover, being an organist himself, his Organ works are significant and remain ever-popular to this day. When French organist, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) compiled the series of Franck's Organ Works, it was well-received, and to this day remains popular with all organists. The first volume includes a favoured selection of Franck's works, including his Large Symphonic Piece. In addition, Dupré's annotations in Organ Works comprise fingerings, rules on technique and instructions on ornamentation, among other aspects. This compilation of Franck's most loved compositions for the Organ cannot be missed by aspiring performers of the instrument.&rdquo.

Psalm 150 calls out to sing the praise of God on various instruments. Many composers have set this text to music, including Cesar Franck. Nevertheless, Franck, who worked as an organist in Paris for many years and wrote many orchestral works and oratorios, left only a few works on Biblical texts in a large setting. Franck wrote his setting of Psalm 150 in 1883 for the inauguration of the organ in a home for the blind in Paris. The basically simple, homophonic choral writing was conceived with the young students in mind. Franck regularly articulated the texture of the full orchestra with percussion and harp entries evocative of tone-painting. It is a short, effective work that has been making a strong impact at many choral concerts ever since its publication by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1896.

LES DJINNS was written at the request of pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, though César Franck's (1822-1890) short work for piano and orchestra was instead premiered on March 15, 1885 by Louis Diémer with the Société Nationale de Musique. The piece is inspired by the poem of the same name in Victor Hugo's LES ORIENTALES, as Franck represents the idea of the mysterious and supernatural forces tearing the nocturnal sky through their passage. Franck was impressed with the virtuosic playing and interpretation of Diémer in this difficult work, which sparked a renewed interest in the piano for the composer. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.4: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.

Composed for oboe and piano accompaniment, Piece V by Cesar Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the piano introducing each phrases followed by the oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the oboe and the piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (organ and piano), composer and professor born in the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liege) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions, some of these pieces were very famous such as Symphony in D minor and Prelude, Chorale and Fugue among others.

Cesar Franck (1822-1890) is now regarded as one of the most important French composers and organists of his time. Les Beatitudes, his monumental oratorio setting the text from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5,3ff.), is regarded as his most important work and is on an equal footing with the great oratorios of the 19th century. But Franck himself did not live to hear the extremely successful first performance in summer 1891.Through its symmetrical dramatic structure, the work conveys the idea of a great arch. A short prologue is followed by eight movements in which the words of Christ are contrasted with earthly scenes. The choir has an important role as commentator on the events. The conclusion of the work is an overwhelming hymn - the entry into paradise. With this Carus edition, the Beatitudes is published in a modern, thoroughly-researched Urtext edition for the first time. The orchestral scoring is typical of the French orchestra of the time. Both the number of soloists and the size of choir required can be reduced by skilful allocation of the roles. The score offers many practical performance suggestions, based on the editor's own experience in trying these out. A new vocal score, prepared with ease of playability in mind, replaces the historic reprint edition previously available from Carus. Ambitious amateur choirs can also perform this magnificent work.

Cesar Franck's great orchestral Mass in A major of 1861 is one of the works which the composer wrote for liturgical use at St. Clotilde in Paris, the church where he played for many years as a famous organist and organ improviser. Probably because of concerns on the part of his publisher, a few years after Franck composed his orchestral Mass he reworked it for much smaller forces: instead of orchestra, just organ, harp, cello, and double bass are required. It was this version of the work was first published in 1872 in Paris. As well as the orchestral version (40.646/00), Carus-Verlag also publishes this much reduced version - both in the original, now rather unusual, choral scoring for soprano, tenor, and bass (40.646/50), and in a four-part scoring adapted for modern-day choirs (40.646/60).Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4064600.

The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4009800.
