The central significance of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562?1621) for the evolution of baroque ?clavier music? can hardly be overestimated. Yet all the currently available editions of his works stand in need of revision. Our new scholarly-critical performance edition, prepared by the experienced editor Siegbert Rampe , closes this gap. It is the first complete edition of Sweelinck?s keyboard works to distinguish between ?works of secure authenticity? , ?works of uncertain authenticity? and ?works of questionable authenticity?. It is also the first to present alternative readings in synoptic form and to separately reproduce variant versions.

The bilingual edition (German and English) is scheduled to appear in four volumes and incorporates the latest findings of musical scholarship. With Volume 3 of Sweelinck's complete works for keyboard instruments, 'Chorale and Psalm Variations, ' editor Harald Vogel presents a group of works that can enhance many of today's religious services. Vogel's approach to the fundamental issues of performance practice in this edition is exceptionally knowledgeable. He begins by supplying a 'practical source edition' of the works, in which he attempts to respect the unique aspects of the notation as much as possible. Moreover, in the appendix he provides the text and origin of all the chorale melodies on which the pieces are based. The second advantage of this new edition is Vogel's comprehensive essay on 'Sweelinck's Organs and the Sources for Registration, ' which provides the current state of Sweelinck scholarship on this problematic area and brings to light a previously unknown source. The organs that play a role in this context are described in detail. From his source studies, Vogel draws the essential conclusion that performance practice should make less use of the tutti and more of 'registrations with few stops' and 'a great variety of tone colors. In 1597 the Antwerp printer Pierre Phalèse issued what was to be his last new anthology of chansons, Le Rossignol musical des chansons for the enjoyment of those who delight in singing in the French tongue. Like his great madrigal anthologies of the 1580s, this collection for four, five, and six voices exhibits a wide variety of secular song styles of the time. Texts range from the conservative and somewhat moralistic to the risqué and playful, and musical styles from the homophonic, rhythmic manner associated with the Parisian chanson to the more polyphonic and expressive style of the Italian madrigal. Composers include local Antwerp musicians such as Pevernage and Cornet, Netherlanders working abroad such as Rogier and Monte, and Frenchmen such as Le Jeune and Caignet. Although a few of the pieces had been published previously, most are unique to this print.

Jan Sweelinck (1562-1621) was among the most famous organists of seventeenth century Europe and an influential composer in the Dutch and North German tradition. Bridging both Renaissance and Baroque styles the Dutch composer is best remembered for the inventive sparkling music he wrote for organ and other keyboard instruments. This remarkable treasury includes nearly all of Sweelinck's brilliant keyboard works most of which have survived only in widely scattered seventeenth century manuscripts. In Sweelinck's day these were some of Europe's most popular pieces for organ and keyboard. Nowadays they retain every bit of their original intensity and vigour. Reproduced inthis authoritative complete-resource edition they will be welcomed by serious keyboard artists who will find them as praiseworthy today as they were when first known and played in Europe over three hundred years ago.

Le présent volume de 12 Motet Intabulations vient compléter les 3 volumes déjà publiés avec la musique d'orgue par Heinrich Scheidemann (vers 1595-1663), de sorte que le oeuvre d'orgue complet de l'organiste de Hambourg est maintenant disponible dans un éditorial modern standard. Toccatina. The syncopated Toccatina is influenced by pop music as well as the music of South America, while the use of repeated notes is derived from Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. The piece will be effective on any size of instrument, providing a joyous lift at the end of a service or in a recital.

Johann Jacob Froberger (1617 67) enjoyed an outstanding reputation during his lifetime as his compositional style represented a synthesis of Italian French and English influences. There is now a growing awareness that Froberger?s significance for Keyboard music of the 17th century is comparable only with that of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.Each volume contains a critical commentary as well as a detailed foreword with sections on the scope and structure of the new edition the editorial method and performance practice. Information on contemporary instruments ornamentation and Froberger?s biography is also included.Both volumes VI.1 andVI.2 contain music from anonymous copies of the 17th century undoubtedly made from autograph manuscripts which were returned to the Singakademie in Berlin from Kiev in 2001.
