The Study Score for Simon Holt's Morpheus Wakes a concerto for Flute or Alto Flute and Orchestra. Commissioned by BBC Radio 3 this work was first performed at the BBC Proms on 27th July 2014 at theRoyal Albert Hall in London. A full performance lasts around 15 minutes. Morpheus Wakes is a Flute concerto in two movements. In the first the soloist plays the Alto Flute before switching toFlute for the second.

Giulio Briccialdi (1818-1881) was born in Terni Italy in the Papal States and studied flute with his father until the age of 14. Following the passing of his father Briccialdi moved to Rome where he studied composition and was appointed to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia as flute teacher. He would ultimately go on to teach flute to Italian royalty including the king's brother. He also toured as a performer throughout Europe and America and finally settled in London becoming a director of the flutemaking firm Rudall and Rose. During this time he was responsible for several mechanical developments which are still in use today notably the B-flat lever. Outside ofBriccialdi's important contributions to flute instrument making this virtuoso arrangement of the popular theme would become one of his most enduring legacies. This piece taken from the Champs-Élysées Scene (Acte II) in the Opera 'Orpheus And Eurydice' is divided into two main parts: Lento Dolcissimo and Piú Lento which are both repeated with the piece finishing on a Coda. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.
