B-Dur-Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical 'modern' elements its various forms never sound archaic rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. J?ai composé cette messe dans les premières années de ma présence à Notre-Dame, avant la création de l?association Musique sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris et la restructuration de la maîtrise sous sa forme actuelle. La maîtrise existait déjà, bien sûr ; on enseigne en effet le chant en ce lieu depuis le Moyen-Âge, à l?époque où la cathédrale était encore en construction, il y a plus de 850 ans. À la fin des années 1980, la maîtrise était bien différente de ce qu?elle est devenue maintenant. Elle était alors dirigée par le chanoine Jehan Revert, maître de chapelle, qui fut pour moi un véritable guide, et dont la mémoire restera toujours dans le c?ur des musiciens de Notre-Dame. C?est donc à cette époque que j?ai composé cette messe qui fut à la fois ma première composition et ma première ?uvre liturgique. Elle est volontairement très courte, d?où son titre, pour répondre du mieux possible aux contraintes liturgiques. Elle est aussi le reflet de mon profond attachement à ce lieu unique et tellement inspirant pour le jeune musicien que j?étais alors. Of the three oratorios which Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed when he was music director in Hamburg, Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu is particularly intended to create splendor and effect with its use of magnificent-sounding trumpets and timpani. Bach liked this work very much and had it published in 1787, the year before his death. The following year the oratorio was performed by Mozart in Vienna.The text of the oratorio by Carl Wilhelm Ramler (1725?1798; better known as the poet of the frequently-set ?Der Tod Jesu?) covers the Easter story of the disciples at Emmaus and the doubting Thomas, up to the image of Jesus ascending to heaven.The score is published as Vol. IV,2 of the C.P.E.
