Il Rozzo Martello for unaccompanied choir SATB by Peter Maxwell Davies was commissioned by BBC Radio 3. It was first performed on 14th August 1997 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London by the BBC Singers conducted by StephenCleobury.A Michaelangelo sonnet lies at the heart of Il Rozzo Martello - a contemplation on the process of artistic creation and the role of inspiration within it the sculptor's ‘crude hammer’; of the title in Davies'swords ‘a pale echo of the creative efforts of exploring the same theme and similar imagery’. This introduction is distinguished from the setting of Michaelangelo's test by adopting a plainsong style although it builds to aclimax with progressively rich harmony Duration: c 12 minutes.

Martyr was commissioned by St Albans Chamber Choir in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their founding. It was premiered by the St Albans Chamber Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in St Albans Abbey on 24 January 2009 under the direction of John Gibbons. Martyr was written as a counterpart to Haydn's Missa in Angustiis ('Nelson' Mass) using the same orchestration as Haydn's original version. In venues where an organ is present the optional organ part should always be used. The four SATB solo parts should be performed by a group of singers placed to the side or to the front of the orchestra away from the main chorus. This piece for double choir (which has a companion Ave maris stella devised for separate performance) is grounded in traditional harmonic progression. An astonishing build-up of devotional intensity is achieved withnear-exclusive reference to the notes of the G major diatonic scale. At the pinnacle of the piece an electrifying F natural is introduced which in combination with an A minor triad replicates the climactic chord from thedevelopment section of the opening movement of Beethoven’s 3rd ('Eroica') Symphony. The ‘Eroica chord’ has iconic status in Polish music playing a major role in the final movement of Górecki’s famedSymphony No.3 (the 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs').

Commissioned by Eamonn Quinn for Louth Contemporary Music Society with funding from the Arts Council of Ireland/ An Chomhairle Eala on. World Premiere on 25th October 2008 at St. Patrick’s Church Dundalk by Polyphony conductedby Stephen Layton. This moving Byzantine text is taken from the Service of the Twelve Gospels celebrated at one o’clock on the morning of Good Friday in the Orthodox Church. The words are taken from Hosea but given aChristian context by the Byzantine poet. The final sacred monosyllable ‘OM’ from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions denotes The Eternal.
