Chopin's waltzes caused controversies. They reached a peak of popularity and were treated by many as masterpieces, by others as gravitating towards drawing-room music. Along with the nocturnes and impromptus, they are regarded as part of a ''female'' trend in Chopin's output. The ''Complete Works'' is the best known and most popular series of editions of Fryderyk Chopin's works, prepared by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Ludwik Bronarski and Józef Turczyński. The aim of the editorial committee was as faithful a rendition of the composer's intention as possible by firmly basing the publication on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself as well as the forst editions. The whole consists of 21 volumes. The content of edition: Chopin Fryderyk - Grande Valse Brillante in E flat major Op. 18 Chopin Fryderyk - Grande Valse Brillante in A flat major Op. 34 No. 1 Chopin Fryderyk - Grande Valse Brillante in A minor Op. 34 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Grande Valse Brillante in F major Op. 34 No. 3 Chopin Fryderyk - Grande Valse in A flat major Op. 42 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in D flat major Op. 34 No. 1 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in C sharp minor Op. 64 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in A flat major Op. 64 No. 3 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in A flat major Op. 69 No. 1 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in A flat major Op. 69 No. 1 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in B minor Op. 69 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in B minor Op. 69 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in G flat major Op. 70 No. 1 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in F minor - A flat major Op. 70 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in F minor - A flat major Op. 70 No. 2 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in D flat major Op. 70 No. 3 Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in E minor Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in E major Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in A flat major Chopin Fryderyk - Waltz in E flat major

A New Critical Edition » (rédacteur en chef John Rink)
- Commentaire critique approfondi
La série « The Complete Chopin ?
A New Critical Edition » :
Partitions classique / Piano - instruments à clavier / Piano / EDITION PETERS

These reached the heights of popularity, and are considered by many considered to be masterpieces, although in the view of the skeptics gravitated dangerously toward salonism. They were included, along with the nocturnes and impromptus, to Chopin's feminine works. In the descriptions of their nature appear: volatility, airiness, overwheleming movement, aristocracy, eroticism. They are divided into two trends: social and concert. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawe? Kami?ski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form. Par CHOPIN FREDERIC. The Complete Chopin ? A New Critical Edition from Edition Peters is firmly established as the most important ongoing scholarly edition of Chopin\'s music and is a must for any discerning pianist. The world?s foremost Chopin editors, under Editor-in-chief John Rink, bring their unrivalled collective knowledge to imbue the project with unique authority, drawing upon the latest international scholarship. The Complete Chopin prioritizes the needs of the practical pianist and provides a beautifully presented performing text of each work based on a single principal source together with important variants, along with thorough critical commentaries and illuminating prefatory essays in English, French and German. Chopin\'s early Nocturne in E-flat major is one of his most popular works. First published in 1832, it has a charming, vocally-inspired melody in the treble with a serenade-like accompaniment in the left hand. Edited by leading Chopin scholar, Christophe Grabowksi, this volume presents two versions of the Nocturne: one based on the most definitive impression of the French first edition released during Chopin?s lifetime, the second a pioneering compilation of all the variants to have flowed from Chopin?s pen after the work was first completed. This second text allows pianists to create their own versions of the Nocturne by combining variants as they wish, thereby drawing inspiration directly from Chopin\'s boundless imagination. Edited by leading Chopin scholar, Christophe Grabowksi, as part of the Edition Peters series The Complete Chopin (series editors: John Rink, Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger, Jim Samson, Christophe Grabowski). Ground-breaking format, presenting both an Urtext reading and a version with all variants attributable to Chopin, allowing pianists to create their own version. / Date parution : 2022-07-28/ Répertoire / Piano

(+)
In accordance with the tradition of the genre, these are characterised by sentimentality, intimacy and programmatic tendencies. Characteristic for them is a turbulent middle section and a richly ornamented reprise. However, variability of dynamics and musical course are not appropriate for nocturnes, rather holding on to a particular mood, full of expectation or the past brought to the present. The Complete Chopin prioritizes the needs of the practical pianist and provides a beautifully presented performing text of each work based on a single principal source together with important variants, along with thorough critical commentaries and illuminating prefatory essays in English, French and German. Chopin?s etudes occupy a central position in piano literature. Prized by generations of the greatest pianists as the supreme examples in the genre, their reputation rests on their not only challenging specific aspects of a pianist?s technique, but also for being great music, transcending the genre of mere ?study?. In this edition of opus 10 (the earlier of Chopin?s two sets of studies, ending with the famous \'Revolutionary\' etude), pianist and musicologist Roy Howat presents a new edition which addresses many of the misunderstandings created by a very poorly engraved first French edition (containing errors which were then carried over to the German and English editions) ? an edition which nevertheless included many important revisions made at proof stage. Using this first French edition as a primary source, Howat produces an Urtext edition which, while recording noteworthy variants from a variety of sources, is not a ?conflated? version, but a coherent performing edition in its own right, ideal for all who aspire to play these cornerstones of piano repertoire in an informed way. / Date parution : 2022-09-07/ Recueil / Piano

He lived in the shadow of death painfully aware of the tuberculosis that would kill him prematurely. But Frédéric Chopin attained immortality with his Piano works which endure as pinnacles of the instrument's repertoire. This biography by one of the nineteenth century's foremost pianists--Chopin's friend and fellow artist Franz Liszt--offers a highly informed assessment of the Polish composer's musical legacy. It is further enlivened by the author's personal acquaintance with Chopin's other friends who constituted the very cream of Parisian intellectual and artistic society.Born a year apart Chopin andLiszt came of age in an era favorable to musical change when audiences as well as performers were receptive to Romanticism's innovations. Liszt surveys the technical brilliance as well as the poetry of Chopin's masterpieces including the 'Adagio' from Piano Concerto No. 2 and Polonaise in F-sharp Minor. He also chronicles Chopin's progress from child prodigy to the darling of Parisian salons. A source of rare and unparalleled insights into Chopin's world of private anguish and public triumph this memoir recounts the composer's loneliness as a Polish emigré his tempestuous romance with George Sand and his life among a glittering social set that included Balzac Hugo Berlioz Delacroix and Schumann.Reprint of the Oliver Ditson Company Boston 1880 edition.

(+)

Chopin's works for piano and strings were usually made for a specific occasion, and we owe their existence to the repertoire needs of specific individuals. The exception is the Sonata in G minor for cello, the last work by the composer intended for publication, a work reflecting his current style, highly reflective, the result of imagination encroaching into post-romantic areas. Chopin's chamber works belong to the regular concert repertoire. These works were edited by by I. J. Paderewski, L. Bronarski and J. Turczyński. (+)
Par CHOPIN FREDERIC. Chopin Berceuse for Piano Op.57 Chopin's ?Berceuse? is one of his most frequently performed works and was regarded by subsequent composers as the prototype of the instrumental lullaby. This piece that Chopin initially named ?Variantes? was composed around the time of his great Sonata in B minor Op.58 and was renamed ?Berceuse? only when it went to print. In it, the composer systematically subjects a four-measure motif to a series of variants which are linked in a continuous flow over an ostinato figure. This Urtext edition reflects the latest state of Chopin research, offering a definitive musical text based on a careful evaluation of the sources. Readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary (Eng) and a detailed Foreword (Ger/Eng) provides information on the work. Hardy Rittner, a Chopin specialist as well as Professor of Piano at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, has supplemented the composer's fingering from a historically informed perspective. His chapter on performance practice contains valuable notes, particularly on Chopin's pedal indications which clearly diverge in the sources, on rubato, the execution of ornaments as well as on tonal nuance, voice-leading and cantabilità. - Urtext edition based on the cutting edge of scholarship - Historically informed fingering and notes on performance practice by Hardy Rittner (Ger/Eng) - Well-presented engraving / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Piano

(+)
Published posthumously in 1855 the Fantaisie Impromptu In C# Minor Op. Post.66 is one of Chopin???s most frequently performed and popular compositions. There was initially some mystery surroundingthe piece and why Chopin never published it during his lifetime. James Huneker trying to explain why the piece was not published calls parts of it 'mawkish' and 'without nobility' whilst Ernst Oster writes that atechnical exploration would show why Chopin did not publish the work and that exploration shows that the Fantaisie-Impromptu and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata ('Quasi una fantasia') are related.Themystery may have been solved in 1960 when pianist Arthur Rubinstein acquired the 'Album of the Baroness d'Este' which had been sold at auction in Paris. The album contained a manuscript of the Fantaisie-Impromptu written in Chopin's own hand and dated 1835. The title page for the manuscript states that the piece was 'Composed for the Baroness d'Este by Fr?d?ric Chopin' and from this Rubinstein surmises that the words 'Composedfor' in place of a dedication imply that Chopin received a paid commission for the work. This Henle Urtext Edition for solo Piano has been edited by Ewald Zimmermann and includes fingering by Hans-MartinTheopold.

The genesis of Chopin's Polonaise Brillante Op. 22 leads back to his youth in Warsaw and the years of his first trips as a virtuoso. Designed as a concert piece with Orchestra it takes up a special position among the polonaise compositions of Chopin. However by tradition the work has always been performed as an extremely effective solo piece. Since no autograph has survived the various first prints are used as sources. Comparisons show that the English first edition must have been based on the autograph manuscript of Chopin. The present new edition therefore rates this English edition more highly than usual. Thus numerous discrepancies and omissions in the French definitive edition which generally is regarded as the most important source can be clarified and complemented. The notes on interpretation not only explain the relatively rare term 'spianato' but also provide information on Chopin's way of playing trills and appoggiaturas as well as on Chopin's tempo rubato. For that sources from the vicinity of the composer such as messages from his pupil Karol Mikuli are evaluated.

The melody here is less ornamented and more fluid the sketch of the cantilena very noble and clear the highly virtuosic element is exposed but not to the extent of overwhelming the logic of the design. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawe Kami ski based on manuscripts copies approved by Chopin himself and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form. The present score is composed of parts from the first edition. The concert version of the score recreated by taking into consideration also other sources which present Chopin`s intention constitutes volume 33 B VIIIa. The Concerto in an authentic arrangement for one piano makes up volume 13 A XIIIa. The version with the second piano containing the reduction of the orchestra part forms volume 30 B VIa. The historical scores are purer with regard to editorial interference yet contaminated by the involvement in the sources of foreign hands. Fr?d?ric Chopin???s 4 Scherzi are high points in the Romantic piano repertoire. Chopin here takes a traditional genre and fills it with radically new content. They are wild demonic in tone and there is little about them that isjoke-like despite the original meaning of their title. Referring to the 1st Scherzo Robert Schumann asked: ???how should seriousness be attired when even a ???joke??? is veiled in black'???. Now that the Scherzi nos. 1 4 have beenpublished in revised stand-alone editions G. Henle Publishers is now offering all four in paperback and hardback in an edition that reflects the current state of Chopin research. (+)
James Gibbon Huneker (1857-1921) was a distinguished American newspaper critic, an essayist, and a prolific author. His writing style is remarkable ? unrestrained, informal, full of brilliant insight ? and this style plus Huneker's wide knowledge of art and literature as well as music has kept his literacy work alive. Chopin: The Man and His Music reflects the intimate, thorough knowledge of Chopin's music that Huneker acquired while studying to be a concert pianist and his unusually keen insight into the character of the great Polish composer whose music he adored. The book is divided into two parts. The first treats Chopin's life ? his youth in Poland, his emigration to Paris, the famous George Sand episode, his sickness and death ? and comments on Chopin as a teacher and as a pianist and performer. The second part discusses the entire body of Chopin's music, piece by piece. Huneker notes his own overall impression of the individual compositions as well as the impressions of Schumann, George Sand, Chopin's biographer Frederick Niecks, many of the great pianists, and others. He directly compares differing editions of Chopin's Études, Preludes, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Polonaises, Sonatas, and other works edited by von Bülow, Kullak, Riemann, Mikuli, and Godowsky in their detailed treatment of fingering, phrasing, pedaling, tempo indication, and so forth. Huneker's entire work is reprinted here unchanged, thoroughly edited in running footnotes by Herbert Weinstock to correct the exuberant Huneker's inaccuracies and to add information that modern musical scholarship has unearthed. Weinstock has also provided an engrossing introductory essay on Huneker, and has amplified the bibliography to include modern books and articles on Chopin. A classic in musical biography and commentary, this work is unsurpassed for sympathetic understanding and insight into Chopin's life and music. It will interest equally music students, pianists, and music lovers.

Piano / Partition

Chopin's Polish Ballade Op. 38: Reference

as Narrative of National Martyrdom-Chopin's Second Ballade Op. 38 is frequently performed and takes only seven or so minutes to play. Yet the work remains very poorly understood—disagreement prevails on issues from its tonic and two-key structure to its posited relationship with the poems of Adam Mickiewicz. Chopin's Polish Ballade is a reexamination and close analysis of this famous work revealing the Ballade as a piece with a powerful political story to tell. Through the general musical styles and specific references in the Ballade which use both operatic strategies and approaches developed in programmatic piano pieces for amateurs author Jonathan Bellman traces aclear narrative thread to contemporary French operas. His careful historical exegesis of previously ignored musical and cultural contexts brings to light a host of new insights about this remarkable piece which as Bellman shows reflects the cultural preoccupations of the Polish émigrés in mid-1830s Paris pining with bitter nostalgia for a homeland now under Russian domination. This vital connection to the extramusical culture of its day forms the basis for a plausible relationship with the nationalistic poetry of Mickiewicz. Chopin's Polish Ballade also solves the long-standing conundrum of the two extant versions of the Ballade making an important point about the flexible notion of 'work' that Chopin embraced.
