Compositori Italiani del XX secolo Vol. 1-• New volume of the Ricordi Instrumental Library series dedicated to the instrumental repertoire of the Twentieth Century. The series includes publications for piano violin/piano guitar and now cello/piano.• This anthology fills an editorial void by re-proposing a series of pieces that would otherwise be difficult if not downright impossible to find and yet have played a special role in the evolution of music for cello and piano in Italy.• The criteria adopted in choosing these pieces are: their musical value their interest from a piano teacher’s point of view and their ability to represent a given period in the history of Italian music and culture.

Favourtie French Melodies-In creating these dozen arrangements I am unashamedly cherry-picking from a long and rich seam of French music. I feel confident that younger players and those relatively new to the cello will enjoy my selection. Forgive my tongue-in-cheek title for the book French Baguettelles (I'm half French so I don't feel too guilty!) for the music herein has more than a hint of garlic about it. Although there are certainly serious overtones to one or two pieces there is a healthy dollop of silliness to lighten the mood. Apart from Sur la Pont d'Avignon which was reportedly written in the 15th century Frère Jacques which was a popular 18th century song and Tambourin which wasin all probability also written in the 18th century (Gossec did however live well into the 19th century) all of the pieces come from composers who lived in the Romantic period. Ravel and Debussy were of course known for their impressionistic colours though for the most part it is the accompaniments which reveal this characteristic most fully. I have endeavoured to keep the piano parts playable by mere mortals conscious of the fact that cello teachers may not possess a virtuosic piano facility but may nevertheless wish to turn their hand to accompanying pupils for concerts festivals exams etc. Many of the pieces were originally written for the piano either in its solo capacity (Ravel's Pavane Pour une Infante Défunte Chabrier's Idylle Satie's Gymnopedie 1 Debussy's La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin) or in duet form (Fauré's Berceuse from 'Dolly Suite'). Three orchestral pieces Bizet's L'Arlésienne Offenbach's Can-Can and Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre lend a welcome dramatic overtone to the book while Franck's exquisite Panis Angelicus originally conceived as a choral piece rounds off the selection admirably. In the main it is the cello's capacity for lyricism that has steered my choice of music so really open up your sound and enjoy yourself with these ageless melodies.I wish you bonne chance!Baguette: a thin loaf of

Fragment of the string quartet Silent Walls-'Novelty of form selected modulations strange tone colours the use of completely unexpected rhythms' this is how Camille Saint-Saëns praised the debut work of a young colleague and continued: 'Above everything is a charm that surrounds the whole work and makes the mass of average listeners accept the most surprising audacities as something entirely natural.' The First Violin Sonata by Gabriel Fauré (1845 1924) was indeed an extraordinary composition which at the same time opened the way for the oeuvre of one of the most important French composers in the late 19th century and early 20th century: It was particularly with songs and pianomusic that he could win the heart of the audience. In the 1870s Fauré wrote three songs which were originally not meant to be a unity but were later assembled under opus number 7. The first song is 'Après Un Rêve' a romantic rapturous song which like a 'Song Without Words' by Mendelssohn is perfect for making music with an accompanied solo instrument.

Having been the conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for many years Carl Reinecke was one of the most important figures among musicians in the second half of the 19th century. His three sonatas for Violoncello and Piano are of amazing musical quality which puts them right up with sonatas of Johannes Brahms. It is all the more surprising however that a noteworthy Urtext edition of these works did not exist up until now; cellists often had to fall back on copies of the first editions only a few of which were extant. This gap is now closed by the Wiener Urtext Edition - right in time for the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. Itencompasses all three sonatas in one volume thus adding three masterpieces of Romantic chamber music to the less than comprehensive repertoire of the 19th century for Violoncello and Piano.

Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the „École de Paris“. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the „Association of Young Polish Musicians“, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de l’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak‘s enchanting drama music. Arrangeur: Martin Tourish. Martin Tourish is an accordionist, composer and musicologist from Co. Donegal, now based in Dublin. Celtic music is in his blood, for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit, he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments. 'World Music - Celtic? presents material from the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players, but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often 'skeletal?, hence it is important to gain a knowledge of the individual traditions in question and, naturally, he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries, from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day. Tourish accepts that this volume can only scratch the surface of a multi-faceted genre but hopes you will see it as a stepping stone to delve deeper into recordings, festivals and the very communities whence this music comes. Quoting Saxton: My Fantazia for String Quartet was complete in December 1993 in response to a commission from the London International String Quartet Competition for a test piece for the 1994 competition. Funds were provided bythe John S Cohen Foundation.The title gives the clue to the nature of the music: the viol fantasia was the chosen form of composition for the greatest English composers of the mid-seventeenth century Lawes Jenkins Ferraboscoin particular. They inherited the techniques of vocal polyphony from Byrd and Gibbons and forged a new instrumental polyphonic style. The culmination of this genre was reached in the magnificent works of Henry Purcell around1680 and it was Purcell who adopted the spelling ‘Fantazia’.I have always loved this music and when asked to write a short piece for strings I decided to pay tribute to this under-rated tradition. Most fantazias consistedof short joined sections and I have expanded this to create and eight-minute piece in three larger sections the essence being contrapuntal interplay and equality of part-writing. (Any idea of stylistic reference would be absurdion the late twentieth century). The first section is a lyrical allegro moderato which leads into a sustained and intense slow movement; this in turn gives way to a final quick section of a dancing character a featurefrequently encountered in Purcell’s own consort pieces.

He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The catalogue of his compositions, which has nowreached Op. 55, encompasses a huge range of instrumental/vocal chamber music and symphonic works: a vast and articulated catalogue, in which Sergio Calligaris’s composition expresses its inspiration through the dramatic development of a dialecticalcontrast between the two natures of the composer’s personality - the elegiac and the dithyrambic - which confront and interact with each other giving rise to artistic outcomes of a deeply moving nature. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Clarinette, Violoncelle et Piano

Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be.
