Playing with Style is a set of colorful concert pieces in a variety of styles, including tango, ragtime, and jazz. These audience-pleasing pieces are enjoyable to play and will broaden the musical horizons of young players. The pieces use effects such as glissando and tremolo and allow opportunities to explore chromaticisms, swing rhythms and syncopation. Three Little Nocturnes was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2005. Commissioned by the Cikada Ensemble with support from NOMUS and written for Frode Haltli and the Cikada String Quartet. Programme Note: In the first nocturne a slow falling music emerges on an irregular pulse filled with high harmonics in the strings. The second nocturne is fast and unrestful music with a lot of passion which in a moment runs into a glimpse of a tango. In this movement the accordion is employed in its traditional fashion using the chord bass with its ?oom-pah-pah? standard chords. The third nocturne is again slow indeed very slow and ithas German tempo and expression markings. The piece ends with a lullaby in the accordion played with an unusual technique imitating the string portato. This is accompanied by high harmonics in the strings while the first violin slowly and softly plays a melody from the second nocturne.Hans Abrahamsen

Mezmer for string quartet is an adaptation of the last movement of Re-Collecting ASTORoids, an earlier suite for orchestra from Kats-Chernin. Commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the suite was written in tribute to Astor Piazzolla and is clearly inspired by tango, though Kats-Chernin uses various rhythms as her source of inspiration. Mezmer is a miniature and has an intimate, smoky feel with a bluesy violin solo laden with vibrato. An air of solitude and reflection surrounds the piece. / Quatuor A Cordes

C'est l'ensemble Apostrophe, composé de solistes de l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, qui m'a commandé ce petit cycle pour quatuor à cordes en vue d'un prochain concert Carte-blanche autour de plusieurs de mes oeuvres en mai 2007 à Nice. Il s'agit d'une série de croquis au fusain, étape récréative et préparatoire entre deux travaux plus développés: le remaniement de mon premier quatuor à cordes Les Heures maléfiques et le projet d'un troisième quatuor à cordes pour le Quatuor Diotima dont la création aura lieu au festival du Périgord Noir en août prochain. Note-book est composé de cinq pièces de caractère très contrastant. Le Pic-vert, à l'origine écrit pour piccolo et piano, rejoint dans sa nouvelle instrumentation pour quatuor le bois des instruments à cordes, bois tant prisé par l'oiseau... Ecrit pour piano en 2001, Harmoni(qu)es est ici transformé en plages méditatives, en chants d'harmoniques naturelles et artificielles des cordes. Tango est un hommage à Piazzolla et à son art majeur. Beatles-mania: une écriture plus 'rock', jouant sur des timbres anguleux et assez rauques du quatuor à cordes. Enfin, Gagaku retrouve les couleurs d'une musique japonaise suspendue, en particulier les sonorités de l'orgue à bouche, le Shô, magnifique instrument pré-accordé en dix accords de six notes aigues.
