Herbert Howells wrote this Serenade in 1917 as the third and final movement of his Suite for Strings Op. 16 (Op 27 on the manuscript) the first two movements of which were re-used by the composer for his Concerto for String Orchestra (213) and Elegy (63) respectively. The Serenade remained unpublished until the present edition of 2011. It was first performed on 13th July 1917 at the Royal College of Music London by the RCM Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Stanford

Originally a popular Baroque musical form, the chaconne is characterized by a set of ground-bass variations. In Kocsár's piece the 23-bar theme is followed by nine variations of diverse characters. The composition lasts about nine minutes and is rounded off with a recapitulation of the theme and a coda. The Chaconne can be performed by junior string orchestras consisting of either two violins and a cello or a violin, a viola, and a cello (with or without double bass), or by string trios consisting of two violins and violoncello or a violin, a viola and a cello. The edition includes a full score and one part for each instrument. For String Orchestra-Eros was given its world premiere in Moscow Russia in the Hall of Composers at the XXIX Annual Fall Moscow New Music Festival sponsored by the Union of Russian Composers. It was the first American work to be premiered at the Festival in over twodecades. In the following years Eros has been presented by the Union of Ukrainian Composers at their Kiev International New Music Festival and by other orchestras in Russia and Ukraine. This score is the first publication of the revised composition.The composer rewrote twenty-one seconds of music in the first movement ?Song? which is in this score.
