Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella. The University Choir Lille MUKO and soprano Else Torp, conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen. For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works, not least from the 20th century, but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fully demonstrate the wide range and originality ofDanish choral music: the particular, lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom, such as Vagn Holmboe, Bernhard Lewkovitch, and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin, including Hans Christian Andersen, Johannes V. Jensen, and Tove Ditlevsen. We hope that this release will help to spread knowledge and understanding of Danish choral music outside Denmark. (Jesper Grove Jørgensen) Content P. E. Lange-Müller: 3 Madonna Songs Rued Langgaard: 3 Rosengaard Songs Svend S. Schultz: Denmark Revisited Vagn Holmboe: Songs Towards the Deep of Spring, op. 85 Jørgen Jersild: Three Danish Love Songs Bernhard Lewkovitch: 3 Motets, op. 11 Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen: 6 Simple Danish Songs Bo Holten: Rain and Rush and Rosebush.

The exuberant amorousness of a newly-wed couple pulsates in every note of Gabriel Faure's Dans les ruines d'une abbaye (In the ruins of an abbey). In this piece, the reverent silence of prayer no longer prevails, but within the venerable walls various shouts of joy and sparkling laughter are now heard. The old graves have long been overgrown by stinging nettles, and a new dawn of spring and of love fills the air. Napoleonic post-revolutionary France, which drove the author of the poem, Victor Hugo, into exile, is also building a new world on the ruins of olden days. Although the setting by the composer, 40 years younger than the poet, uses the romanticized backdrop of the old abbey, with its 6/8-meter it reflects the uninhibited happiness of the two lovers, who do not look back. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

This Dohanyi setting became a classic many years ago. It is a stunning festival piece for concert or worship. Originally written for organ, this version provides a piano accompaniment that functions on its own, but is actually a reduction of a robust new orchestration. Composed in the 1930's, the character of the piece is 20th century romanticism: classical and lush.

Johannes Brahms, born May 7, 1833 in Hamburg, Germany and died April 3, 1897 in Vienna where he lived most of his life. Brahms is one of the most famous composers of the Romantic period (1830-1920) although his music has many elements of the Classical period (1750 to 1830) as he followed many of the practices of Classical composers Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. In addition to being a composer, he was also well-known as a pianist and conductor. Brahms began writing the Requiem (also known as the German Requiem, Opus 45) soon after his mother died in February 1865 which caused him great grief. In April of that year, he completed the first, second and fourth movements and completed the rest of the seven movements in May of 1868. How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place (Wie Lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen) was the fourth movement of his seven movement work. Originally written for SATB voices in E-flat major, this seamlessly similar arrangement for SAB voices, now in C major, affords all voices comfortable ranges. Although, it is approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds in length, it is perceived to be much shorter because of the contrasting stylistic sections within the work. How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place is one of the most beautiful choral pieces by Brahms, perhaps in the entire Romantic period. Although Brahms wrote the original piano reduction, in this edition, it has been made more accessible for pianists with a wide range of skills. Pay close attention to the dynamic markings throughout the piece, making them apparent to the voices, conductor, and audience. I hope you enjoy singing this beautiful and timeless piece by Johannes Brahms! The original version finally availableHeinrich Marschner is considered the most significant German opera composer between Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. Among his most important works is his opera Der Vampyr (The Vampire) premiered in 1828, with which he celebrated his breakthrough. The composer's autograph is regarded as lost, and a score was not published in Marschner's lifetime. It was only in 1925 that Hans Pfitzner produced an edition that must be described as flawed. Breitkopf & Hartel has prepared the complete, practical performance material based on the score published in the Das Erbe deutscher Musik (German Music Heritage) in the version authorized by Marschner and tops it off with a new piano reduction [or piano score?] that is very playable. The splendid music is worth it. Madame Hensel, Mendelssohn's sister, whose eyes speak intelligence and profundity''. This diary entry made by Robert Schumann in June 1843 succinctly but fittingly characterizes Fanny Hensel, without a doubt the most significant woman composer of the 19th century. Born in Hamburg on 14 November 1805, she was the eldest sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. In 1829 she married the Prussian court painter and occasional poet Wilhelm Hensel (1794-1861). After her sudden death in Berlin on 14 May 1847 as a result of a stroke, the music journalist Ludwig Rellstab poignantly wrote that she shared the brotherhood ef talent with her famous sibling.Fanny Hensel was given the same excellent and comprehensive musical training as her precocious brother, including composition lessons with Goethe's friend Carl Friedrich Zelter. Felix and Fanny not only loved each other tenderly, but they also maintained an intensive, life-long exchange of ideas which proved musically profitable to both of them. However, it was only in 1846 that Mendelssohn gave up his resistance to Fanny's publication plans. And so, just shortly before her death, she was able to publish a carefully selected sample of her songs and piano pieces. Not only these pieces, but also a few orchestral and chamber-music works (e.g. the String Quartet in E flat major, KM 2255) and, in particular, choral music occupy an important position in her oeuvre. Most of her choral works were written in 1846, and she was able to rehearse them with the chorus she conducted at the famous Sunday Concerts in the Mendelssohn home. She had six of these choral songs published in a revised version under the title Gartenlieder Op. 3 by the Berlin music publisher Bote & Bock. The title of the Gartenlieder brings to mind Mendelssohn's well-known Lieder im Freien zu singen (Opera 41, 48, 59; ChB 4763-4780), published before 1846. But, as far as the quality of their melodic writing, the compositional technique, and the choice of texts are concerned, as well as the perfect balance between folk-like simplicity and polished design, they are as outstanding as the works of her brother.Fanny Hensel's choral works not only stand up to comparison with any of the rich and varied choral works of the Romantic era - they also rank among the best. Very likely to become hits! (Musica).

Contrary to the previous editions, the piano-vocal score presented here is the first to be based on the composer's autograph and thus features the original version of the work as originally intended by Massenet. Since the singer of the world premiere apparently had vocal problems, Massenet subsequently made some reductions in the closing duo, which have now been eliminated.

The Choir Library for Men's Choir includes distinctly more secular than sacred music. In this, the publishing house's program reflects the great tradition of men's choirs with a predominantly secular repertoire. It inspired many composers to write music for this setting, among them Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. But also lesser-known composers of the romantic period such as Johann Evangelist Habert and Othmar Schoeck created works for men's choirs. More modern composers like Jean Sibelius, Johann Nepomuk David and Siegfried Thiele, also represented here, continue this tradition into the 20th century. We wish you lots of joy at discovering and singing!Sacred MusicI. About Jonas Halgrimsson (1807-1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist, who is considered one of Iceland's most renowned poets. ISBN 9790004209226. 9 x 12 inches.
The 98th Psalm is one of Mendelssohn's church-music works which is hard to categorize. Just like the Lobgesang Cantata, which unites the symphonic form and the chorale cantata, the 98th Psalm joins the motet and cantata forms into a highly expressive unity. The work begins in eight parts a cappella and leads to a vigorous orchestral movement. The use of the harp in Romantic church music was innovative and provocative in Mendelssohn's day.The piano-vocal score made by Mendelssohn himself was completed by Michael Obst, who reduced the introductory a cappella chorus for rehearsal purposes. The 98th Psalm is one of Mendelssohn's church-music works which is hard to categorize.

The German Requiem is one of the world's most famous requiems, even though it does not set the customary requiem text to music. Brahms did not want to follow the Latin Catholic funeral mass, addressing the Last Judgment's terror and sinful human beings' redemption through death on the cross. His attention, on the contrary, was on Biblical texts that focus on human transience and comfort: comfort to the bereaved and comfort to all who fear death. To some extent, it could be called the epitome of Brahms's work. In the relevant volume of the new Brahms Complete Edition, on which this new practical edition is based, editors Michael Musgrave and Michael Struck clear up all sorts of legends, errors, and erroneous readings. Brahms's subsequent minor compositional changes are taken into account, poor decisions in previous editions are corrected, and the Bible texts sung contain writing and meaning corrections. In addition, the texts elucidate many myths about the composition's origin. Thus, this Urtext edition creates a fresh perspective on the People's Requiem, as Brahms would have preferred to call the composition. This new B&H publication is extremely good value, and it really does breathe new life into an old master. The pages of the full score are delightfully easy on the eye. The edition's visual effect is precise, lucid, and sympathetic - as, indeed, a good performance of Brahms's choral masterpiece should be.(Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)authoritative music text based on the current state of research; erroneous traditional readings corrected; orchestra material tried and tested; new piano vocal score (compact engraving, clear legibility).
