Fred Rogers and his television neighborhood were a familiar and comforting companion to countless generations of young people. The music was an important part of each episode and helped re-enforce the lesson being taught. Lyrics and melodies were written and sung by Rogers himself who created more than 200 original songs. Won't You Be My Neighbor?, Tomorrow, It's Such a Good Feeling, It's You I Like, The Weekend Song, and many more are a part of our consciousness and still hold valuable lessons to be learned.

As the opening song in this landmark musical by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, the stage is set. Curly is brimming with optimism and the music of Rogers' captures this emotion perfectly. This new arrangement is in the style of the Pentatonix from Billy Porter's The Soul of Richard Rogers. Although totally different in style from the original, it is no less upbeat and optimistic.

In my opinion our world is currently in great need of reestablishing strong connections one to another, be it with family and friends, neighbors and strangers, nations and nations, or with those of different cultures and religions. In his important book, I and Thou, philosopher-theologian Martin Buber says that the most meaningful life is centered on relationship. As a musician, I felt compelled to express the I-THOU thesis through the human voice. In searching for the right words to express this sentiment, I was fortunate to find Kazuaki Tanahashi’s eloquent poem, “Encounter.†Mr. Tanahashi is a poet, Zen artist, scholar and peace activist. This combined-voices version has been adapted from an SATB scoring that features prominently in the original song cycle, I-THOU, written for vocal quartet, commissioned and premiered in 2018 by Fourth Coast Ensemble in Chicago. —Wayland Rogers About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

A tune by Melchior Vulpius is the source for this arrangement by Sharon Elery Rogers. In this 3-verse hymn, the SATB writing is present throughout, with a canonic treatment of verse 2. In addition to the vocal and keyboard forces, a flute adds a special touch, especially on the third verse, where it quotes HYFRYDOL over the Vulpius tune.
