This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4thdivision of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.Deze compositie is gebaseerd op de mars uit Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, een werk uit het jaar 1694.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal court and Westminster Abbey, and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral, ecclesiastical, operatic, theatrical, incidental, and chamber music were all enriched by his output.
Fantazias And In Nomines is a collection of his 15 Fantasies and 2 In Nomines, Z. 731-747. Purcell is credited with popularising the hitherto arcane form of the Fantasy, perhaps most famously in his Fanstasia Upon One Note, where a middle C is sustained throughout - in live performances this issometimes played by a volunteer from the audience!
This full score edition has been edited by the renowned musicologist Robert Thurston Dart.

This four-movement work captures the essence of Henry Purcell's musical style. The scoring and ranges make this piece very idiomatic and accessible for all instruments. This is excellent teaching material and is ideal for any concert or festival appearance. (6:25).

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used.

Henry Purcell’s epitaph in the Westminster Abbey reads “Here lyes Henry Purcell Esqre, who left this Lyfe and is gone to that Blessed Place where only his Harmony can be exceeded.” Purcell’s setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Delightfully characteristic Baroque counterpoint and harmonies form a great style study for your band while being a wonderful performance piece. Sostenuto passages, a controlled playing style, superb counterpoint, terraced dynamics and good activity for each wind section of the band may make this the perfect “middle” piece for your adjudicated band festival thisyear!
