L’imposante introduction préfigure l’histoire dramatique que raconte la légende.Au pied de la montagne, non loin du lac, vivait jadis un pêcheur avec sa femme et leurs cinq enfants.Un thème paisible (en 6/8) évoque le pêcheur assis dans sa frêle barque dansant au milieu des eaux ondulantes du lac.Un jour, attendant en vain une prise, le pêcheur promit de rejeter l'eau le premier poisson qu'il attraperait dans l'espoir d'être récompensé pour son geste généreux. peineavait-il fait cette promesse qu'il sentit mordre son hameçon. Oubliant sa promesse, il garda le poisson et relança sa ligne. la troisième prise, il sortit de l’eau un chat noir.Le thème paisible est soudainement interrompu par les timbales qui annoncent la prise imminente d’un gros poisson. C’est l’effervescence. Le gros poisson (ou plus précisément le chat) a mordu. Dès lors, la musique devient plus turbulente.Le pêcheur rentra chez lui, le chat sous son bras. Sa femme et ses enfants l’adoptèrent et en prirent soin.Un thème lyrique s’élève de plusieurs pupitres de l’orchestre. Il reflète l’harmonie qui règne dans la famille du pêcheur. Ce sentiment d’harmonie chemine vers un motif plus incisif, suivi d’un coup de grosse caisse illustrant l’agressivité du chat. Au fil des mois, le chat devint agressif, allant jusqu’ mordre les enfants. Comme le pêcheur était superstitieux, il n'osait tuer le chat par crainte de malédiction. Il mit l'animal dans un sac et l'emmena très loin dans la montagne.La marche en montagne est illustrée par un thème ascendant. Le motif plus agressif est ensuite réexposé.L -haut, le chat s'attaqua aux troupeaux, aux chiens, aux femmes et aux enfants. Le pêcheur n'attrapa jamais plus le moindre poisson. The title Belvedere refers to ‘Belvedere Castle’, erected in 1869, and radiates the peaceful atmosphere of this place. Valon is a one-part composition. The surprising opening measures describe the sudden entrance into another world. After these initial measures, we hear a choral-like melody, which is repeated three times in different instrumentations with increasing intensity. This represents the procession of the ghosts dwelling in the underworld of Avalon, headed by the mighty magician Merlin.The exalted sound is then suddenly interrupted by a fast movement, in which ostinato figures alternate with bi-tonal motives. This represents the attempt of some evil characters to invade Avalon. Mordred is the leader of this horde and together they disturb the peace and quiet in the otherwisecalm Avalon. The flourish of trumpets heralds the entrance of the Knights of the Round Table who drive away the intruders and return to their castle, Tintagel, in a triumphal procession. Upon their return, the next problem presents itself. An inexplicable disease plagues the resting ghosts.The Knights and the Council of the Wise are convened to find out the cause of this problem. Musically this can be heard in the repetition of the initial themes. The Knights and the Council of the Wise determine that the presence of mortals is the reason that the resting ghosts are suffering. There is simply no room for mortal souls in Avalon. After a powerful statement by King Arthur, we hear a glissando referring to the very first measures, and… we are back in the normal world. The journey through the underworld has come to an end and a dream is over. Avalon est une pièce dont le décor et les personnages sont empruntés aux légendes arthuriennes. L’œuvre débute par quelques mesures surprenantes qui nous font entrer subitement dans un autre monde. Filadelfia is a small town in the province of Vibo Valentia in the southern Italian region of Calabria. In 1783 the town suffered a devastating earthquake. This work depicts the events before and after the disaster, and starts peacefully, with dance-like music sounding in the streets. After this the earthquake destroys everything, causing deep despair. In the end, the town is being rebuilt, which calls for a festive celebration! Filadelfia is een klein stadje in de provincie Vibo Valentia in de Zuid-Italiaanse regio Calabrië. In 1783 vond hier een verwoestende aardbeving plaats. Dit werk beschrijft de situatie voor en na deze ramp: eerst horen we dansrijke melodieën in de straten, maar daarna vaagt de aardbeving alles weg en klinkt er wanhoop door in de muziek. Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. Philip Sparke had produced a CD recording with Sheona as soloist and had her wonderful sound in his ears while writing this piece. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves merely as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The piano accompaniment takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. The piano then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close.Aria is geschreven in opdracht van en voor de buitengewone althoorniste Sheona White. Componist Philip Sparke heeft een cd-opname geproduceerd met Sheona als soliste, en tijdens het schrijven van dit werk hij had steeds haar prachtige geluid in gedachten. Het werk opent met een begeleid recitatief, dat uitmondt in een modulatie waarmee de hoofdmelodie wordt aangekondigd, die vervolgens weer dient als inleiding tot een ander melodisch idee, dat als calmato is gemarkeerd. Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed.This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band. Guernica, een vredig stadje in het Spaanse Baskenland, werd op 26 april 1937 door nazi bommenwerpers volledig in puin gelegd. Washed up on the Phaeacian shore after a shipwreck, Odysseus is introduced to King Alcinous. As he sits in the palace, he tells the Phaeacians of his wanderings since leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men fi rst landed on the island of the Cicones wherethey sacked the city of Ismarus. From there, great storms swept them to the land of the hospitable Lotus Eaters. Then they sailed to the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and twelve of his men entered the cave of Polyphemus. After the single-eyed giantmade handfuls of his men into meals, Odysseus fi nally defeated him. He got him drunk and once he had fallen asleep, he and his men stabbed a glowing spike into the Cyclop’s single eye, completely blinding him. They escaped by clinging to the belliesof some sheep. Once aboard, Odysseus taunted the Cyclop by revealing him his true identity. Enraged, Polyphemus hurled rocks at the ship, trying to sink it. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island, they arrived at the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca, the crewmen, curious about the bag, decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea, the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him, Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave, Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There, he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother, Anticleia, and met the spirits of Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Antilochus, Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos, Tantalus, and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened, ran back to his ship, and sailed away. While back at Aeaea, Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear, thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship, which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster), but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally, Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past, but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep, his men impiouslykilled and ate some of the cattle. When the Sun god found out, he asked Zeus to punish them. Shortly after they set sail from the island, Zeus destroyed the ship and all the men died except for Odysseus. Vervolgensstak hij een gloeiende paal in zijn ene oog om hem blind te maken. Odysseus en zijn mannen ontsnapten uit de grot door ieder onder de buik van een van Polyphemus’ schapen te gaan hangen. Eenmaal weer aan boord riep Odysseusuitdagend naar de cycloop en onthulde zijn naam. Woedend wierp Polyphemus rotsblokken in de richting van het schip in een poging het te laten zinken. Nadat ze het Cyclopeneiland hadden verlaten, arriveerden ze bij Aeolus, heerservan de winden. Aeolus gaf Odysseus een zak met daarin alle krachtige winden behalve één - die hem rechtstreeks terug naar zijn thuisbasis Ithaca zou voeren. Toen het schip Ithaca bijna had bereikt, besloten de metgezellen, die nieuwsgierigwaren naar de inhoud, de zak te openen. De winden ontsnapten en er ontstond een enorme storm. Odysseus en zijn bemanning kwamen terecht in het land van de kannibalistische Laestrygonen, die alle schepen lieten zinken, opéén na. De overlevenden vluchtten naar Aeaea, het eiland van de tovenares Circe, die de metgezellen van Odysseus in zwijnen veranderde. Met de hulp van een tegengif dat hij had gekregen van Hermes, lukte het Odysseus om Circe teNachdem er an die Küste der Phäaker gespült wurde, wird Odysseus dem König Akinoos vorgestellt. In dessen Palast erzählt er den Phäakern von den Fahrten nach seiner Abreise aus Troja. Odysseus und seine Männer landen zunächst auf denKikonen, einer Inselgruppe, wo sie die Stadt Ismaros einnehmen. Von dort aus treiben sie mächtige Stürme zum Land der gastfreundlichen Lotophagen (Lotos-Essern). Dann segeln sie zum Land der Kyklopen (Zyklopen). Odysseus und seine zwölf Mannenbetreten die Höhle von Poloyphem, dem Sohn Poseidons. Nachdem dieser einige der Männer verspeist hat, überwaÃ…Nltigt ihn Odysseus, indem er ihn betrunken macht und dann mit einem glühenden Spieß in dessen einziges Auge sticht und ihn somitblendet. Odysseus und die übrigen Männer fl iehen an den Bäuchen von Schafen hängend. Wieder an Bord, provoziert Odysseus den Zyklopen, indem er ihm seine wahre Identität verrät. Wütend bewirft Polyphem das Schiff mit Steinen undversucht, es zu versenken. Nachdem sie die Insel der Kyklopen verlassen haben, kommen Odysseus und seine Mannen ins Reich von Aiolos, dem Herr der Winde. Aiolos schenkt ihm einen Beutel, in dem alle Winde eingesperrt sind, außer dem, der ihn direktzurück nach Ithaka treiben soll. Als das Schiff in Sichtweite von Ithaka ist, öff nen die neugierigen Seemänner den Windsack. Die Winde entfl iehen und erzeugen einen Sturm. Odysseus und seine Mannschaft verschlägt es ins Land derkannibalischen Laistrygonen, die alle ihre Schiff e, bis auf eines, versenken. Die Ãœberlebenden reisen weiter nach Aiaia, der Insel der Zauberin Kirke. Odysseus sendet einen Spähtrupp aus, der von Kirke aber in Schweine verwandelt wird. Mit Hilfeeines Gegenmittels vom Götterboten Hermes kann Odysseus Kirke überwaÃ…Nltigen und er zwingt sie, seinen Gefährten wieder ihre menschliche Gestalt zurückzugeben. Als er wieder aufbrechen will, rät Kirke ihm, den Seher Teiresias in derUnterwelt aufzusuchen und zu befragen. Eine Tagesreise führt sie dann ins Land der Kimmerer, nahe dem Eingang des Hades. Dort bringt Odysseus Opfer, um die Seelen der Toten anzurufen. Teireisas sagt ihm sein Schicksal voraus. Dann darf Odysseusmit seiner Mutter Antikleia und den Seelen von Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroklos, Antilochus, Ajax und anderen Toten sprechen. Dann sieht er die Seelen der Verdammten Tityos, Tantalos und Sisyphos. Bald wird Odysseus selbst von den Seelen gequält, kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem Schiff zurück und segelt davon. In Aiaia hatte Kirke ihn vor den drohenden Gefahren der Heimreise gewarnt. Sie riet ihm, den Gesang der Sirenen zu vermeiden, wenn er aber unbedingt zuhören müsse, solle er sich an denMast seines Schiff es bindet lassen, was er dann auch tut. Dann führt Odysseus seine Mannschaft erfolgreich durch die Meerenge zwischen Skylla und Charybdis, wobei Skylla jedoch sechs seiner Männer verschlingt. Schließlich erreichen Odysseusund die überlebende Besatzung die Insel, auf der der Sonnengott Helios heiliges Vieh hält. Odysseus will weitersegeln, aber seine Mannschaft überredet ihn zu einer Rast. Odysseus erzählt ihnen von Kirkes Warnung, aber kaum, dass ereingeschlafen ist, töten die Männer in gotteslästerlicher Weise einige Rinder und verspeisen sie. Als Helios dies entdeckt, bittet er Zeus, sie zu bestrafen. Kurz nachdem sie die Segel für die Abreise von der Insel gesetzt haben, zerstört Zeusdas Schiff und alle außer Odysseus sterben. Nach zehn Tagen wird Odysseus an den Strand der Insel der Nymphe Kalypso angespült.Ulysse, épuisé par la terrible tempête qu’il a subie, échoue sur le rivage des Phéaciens. Après avoir vu le Cyclope dévorer deux de ses compagnons chaque repas, Ulysse ruse pour lui échapper. Il l’enivre puis embrase un épieu taillé, qu’il plante dans l'œil unique du Cyclope endormi,l’aveuglant définitivement. Les survivants sortent ensuite cachés sous le ventre de ses brebis et regagnent leurs bateaux. Faisant preuve d’orgueil, Ulysse crie sa véritable identité au risque de faire sombrer son navire sous une pluie de rochers. Ulysse aborde l’île d’Eolie, au royaume du maître des vents. Eole offre Ulysse un vent favorable pour regagner Ithaque, et une outre renfermant tous les vents contraires. Hélas, la curiosité des marins d’Ulysse aura raison de cet heureux dénouement car, en ouvrant l’outre, les vents contraires s’échappent et déchaînent une nouvelle tempête. Après avoir dérivé plusieurs jours, ils parviennent chez les Lestrygons cannibales qui détruisent l’escadre. Les survivants reprennent la mer avec un unique navire et abordent dans l’île d’Aiaié, séjour de la magicienne Circé. Ulysse envoie des éclaireurs dans les terres. Imprudemment entrés dans la demeure de la magicienne, ils sont transformés en pourceaux. Seul Ulysse échappe au sortilège gr ce l’antidote que lui indique Hermès. Vaincue, Circé s’offre au héros et rend ses compagnons leur forme humaine. Avant de laisser partir Ulysse, Circé lui conseille d’aller au pays des morts consulter l’ombre du devin Tirésias. Après une journée de navigation, le bateau d’Ulysse atteint le pays des Cimmériens. Il s’acquitte des rites appropriés pour pouvoir s’entretenir avec l’ me.

Pie Jesu is the famous aria for soprano and orchestra from Gabriel Fauréâ??s Requiem, opus 48. Fauré (1845- 1924) composed the work in 1887, two years after his fatherâ??s death and only a short time before his mother passed away. Fauréâ??s Pie Jesu is richly atmosphere and peaceful, and Robert van Beringen perfectly captures the essence of Fauréâ??s beautiful music in this arrangement for fanfare band. Pie Jesu is de beroemde aria voor sopraan en orkest uit het Requiem (opus 48) van Gabriel Fauré. Fauré (1845-1924) schreef dit werk in 1887, twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader en kort voor het overlijden van zijn moeder. Pie Jesuis overigens eerder sfeervol en vredig dan treurig te noemen. Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.
