This first edition of the original version of the Missa Sancti Nicolai Tolentini (1768) is Johann Michael Haydn's first large-scale church work. It was composed in Salzburg. The Nicolai Mass conforms to the characteristics of a Missa solemnis. The scoring is striking, and it is not only unique in Haydn's creative output, but also for the repertoire of church music in Salzburg. Two soprano soloists are contrasted by a treble choir, accompanied by strings, trumpet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5410900.

Otto Nicolai, primarily known as an opera composer, succeeded Mendelssohn in 1847 as court Kapellmeister at Berlin Cathedral during the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The King's father had introduced a new Agende, or order of worship, for the whole of Prussia in 1829, with a music appendix for the chorally-sung sections of the liturgy. Friedrich Wilhelm IV commissioned not only Mendelssohn, but in 1846 also Otto Nicolai to compose a new setting of these liturgical motets. Today, these settings are still eminently suitable for use in worship, and some can also be performed separately in concerts. The soloists can be drawn from members of the choir.

Haydn wrote the Missa Sancti Nicolai in 1772, probably for the name day of prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. This work is on a larger scale than the other missae breves, and in the orchestra two oboes and two horns join the strings. At the very beginning of the Kyrie the gentle, pastoral character which distinguishes this work is established. Haydn reprises the music of the Kyrie in the Dona nobis pacem to round off the work. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4060500.
