As with many other libretti by Pietro Metastasio, “Ezio†was also set to music several times – besides Handel, by Nicola Porpora in 1728 and Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1750. As the historical events from late antiquity surrounding the Western Roman General Aëtius, who had defeated the Huns under Attila on the Catalaunian Fields, had largely fallen into oblivion by the 18th century, they merely form a backdrop to the highly-dramatic “Sex and Crime†on the operatic stage. In contrast with the original Roman story, “Ezio†remains alive at the “happy endingâ€, and the enthusiastic public experienced this version for the first time on 15 January 1732 in London . However, despite this, the opera only received five performances during Handel’s lifetime. Handel took the overture from his incomplete opera “Titus l’Empereurâ€. The new vocal score is based on Vol. II/26 of the Halle Handel Edition (BA 4086).

The source of this publication was issued in London in 1745 by John Walsh Jr. Walsh s publication contains six four-movement works, originally written for violin, solo cello, a keyboard instrument and a second cello to reinforce the bass of the latter, but the role of the violin is insignificant, so these works can be regarded as pieces for cello. Of the six works, the arranger of the volume was publishing the three most suitable ones to that as cello concertos the piano part incorporates both the violin interludes and the continuo. In the cello part higher positions do occur, but they do not necessarily require use of the thumb they are playable after 4-5 years intensivestudy of the instrument.

Duration: full evening Text by the composer using a text by Walter Jens Place and time: Chamber of the King Philip V. of Spain, Middle of the 18th Century Characters: Farinelli (Countertenor/alto) - King Philip V. of Spain (baritone) - Nicola Porpora (baritone) - The Kings Personal Physician, also Barber (tenor) - The Kings Confessor, also Impresario and Priest (bass) - Maria (Bellino), later Anna Maria Strada (soprano) - Georg Friedrich Handel (baritone) - Jenny, Jim, John, English Opera Troupe (soprano, tenor, baritone) - The young Carlo Broschi (boy treble) The dramaturgical constellation of the subject forced me to use multifaceted and stylistic means. I have used melodic segments from the Farinelli arias that are still extant today, as well as other Baroque vocal and formal elements, models inspired by the Singspiel and the musical, and even a rap piece over a techno rhythm. The musical center of the opera consists of song and the human voice. Farinelli is a bel canto opera. (Siegfried Matthus) Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was the brightest star among the castrato tenors of the 18th century. Handels enemies brought him to London so that he could outshine Handels singers. Here, Matthus depicts Farinelli at the Spanish court, ruled by the pathologically melancholy King Philip V. In a review of his life, we relive important stages in the career of the singer, who lived outside of the norm and found his home in the fascinating twilight world between art and artificiality.World premiere: Netzeband, July 12, 1997.
