The five first of the six symphonies by Erkki Melartin (1875-1937), dated from 1903 to 1916, represent the National Romantic Finnish musical heritage based on Austo-German orchestral tradition. Melartin himself thought of Symphony No. 3 as his testament and a description of a battle towards enjoying life, since the time of its birth was a period when Melartin's own life nearly ended. He had fallen ill of tuberculosis, and partly had to give up his work as a composer and teacher of music theory in order to recover from the - at the time often fatal - disease in a local sanatorium. At the premiere the symphony had an impact on its audience, as it indeed seemed to describe the joys and sufferings and the final peace of mind of the composer. The new editions of Melartin's symphonies have born as a project of Erkki Melartin Society with support of the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The performance materials are available for hire from Fennica Gehrman.

Erkki Melartin's six-movement Per speculum in enigmatae suite op. 93 for piano is published for the first time. The Latin title of the suite means Through a glass, darkly. Melartin probably compiled it from non-related pieces composed at different times. The biblical heading maybe has a spiritual rather than a religious connotation, though some of the movements - and the title - are programmatic. The first movement, Katedralen (The Cathedral), was possibly inspired by the architecture of Bruges (Brugge). The second movement, Die andere Seite (The Other Side) has expressionistic features, and possibly reflects the influence of Scriabin. In the third movement, Dunkle Traume (Dark Dreams), the chorale-like motifs in the left hand strive upwards, but always fall back again. Movement four, Schwester Namenlos (Sister Nameless is a short cameo in 5/4 time. Erinnerung is a Late-Romantic mood piece with unconventional phrasings. Melartin later expanded the early version of late 1913 with the closing Weihnachtsglocken (Christmas Bells).

Melartin was also a prolific writer of songs of rare stylistic diversity, ranging from lyrical, nature-inspired mood pictures to impressionistic and at times even highly expressionistic pieces. His choice of texts reflects his broad education, for he was equally at home in both Finnish and foreign poetry. The selected songs by Melartin (edited by Matti Tuloisela) are in two volumes. Volume 2 examines his vocal output from a broader stylistic and linguistic perspective. This volume also contains a number of rarer songs in languages other than Finnish with Finnish translations. The Little Quartet for Four Horns op. 185 by Erkki Melartin was commissioned by the progenitor of Finnish horn playing, Holger Fransman (1909-1997). The Helsinki Music Institute's horn class received this three movement quartet from their principal for the spring concert in May 1936. A composition for four French horns was a rarity in 1930s Finland. The quartet was performed for decades as Holger Fransman's arrangement. This edition is based on the original version of the composer.
