À peine un an après leur retour de Suisse, Liszt et sa compagne, Marie d?Agoult, entreprennent en août 1837 un voyage en Italie qui durera plus de deux années. Si, dans le volume Suisse, le compositeur s?était principalement attaché à dépeindre en musique la nature, les paysages et l?histoire du pays, il transcrit dans la partie Italie des impressions provenant de la poésie (Pétrarque, Dante) et des arts plastiques (Raphaël, Michel-Ange). L?ensemble de sept pièces composées entre 1838 et 1849, qui s?achève sur son point culminant, la sonate dite Dante, a fait, avant sa publication en 1858, l?objet de multiples remaniements partiels. Le cahier Venezia e Napoli, paru trois ans plus tard sous forme d?un supplément, est disponible séparément sous la référence HN 985. Par ailleurs, la présente édition révisée prend pour la première fois en compte une copie manuscrite du n° 2 (copie destinée au graveur), comportant des corrections de la main de Liszt. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items is published here for the first time in a scholarly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846- it was later re-worked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st Hungarian Rhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. from 'Myrthen' op. 25-In his virtuosic piano arrangement of Schumann?s ?Widmung? (?Du meine Seele du mein Herz?) Franz Liszt transformed this intimate song into a dramatic declaration that reaches its powerful climax at the phrase ?Mein guter Geist mein bess?res Ich? using chords to be played con somma passione. In Liszt?s autograph the melody is overlaid by the song text but he changes the title to ?Liebeslied?. The first edition published in Leipzig in 1848 retainedthis heading and thus the song is still known today under two different titles. In collaboration with Liszt scholar Mária Eckhardt Henle Verlag presents this best-known of all of Liszt?s Schumann arrangements in a reliable HenleUrtext quality edition.

Supplement 8 of the New Liszt Edition contains first versions of Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos 12-21 and two shorter Liszt pieces with a Hungarian connection. All works in the volume appear here for the first time in a scholarly edition. This version of the Hungarian Rhapsodies ensued in 1846-50 from Magyar dallok (Hungarian Songs) Nos 1-11, published in Supplement 7. Piece No. 13 is based on the Rákóczi March, which Liszt set on several occasions. It had been a vital encore piece since his first concert in Hungary in 1839. Inclusion in this volume of the first version of the piece known as the Mosonyi Funeral March (a forerunner of the much later No. 7 in the Hungarian HistoricalPortraits) is especially notable as its autograph manuscript only emerged recently. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. The Consolations are among the best-known Piano works by Franz Liszt. Their popularity is due not only to their expressive and lyrical character but also to their relatively moderate pianistic demands. Having a long history the final version of the six pieces appeared in print for the first time in 1850. The Wiener Urtext Edition provides this version authorized by Liszt for publication the text of which is mainly based on the German first edition owing to the lack of extant autographs and engraver's copies. In addition the French first edition as well as separate editions of the Consolations Nos. 3 and 5 published in London or Paris wereconsulted as well. The edition is complemented by performance notes of the Liszt pupil Lina Ramann which are virtually first-hand records of Liszt's interpretational ideas. Furthermore a clear notation without page-turn problems makes it easier to study and perform the popular works.

Première Année - Suisse. The three volumes of the ?Années de pèlerinage? belong to the core of Liszt?s piano oeuvre. In the first volume, ?Suisse?, the composer realised impressions of an extended sojourn in Switzerland in 1835/36. The pieces, for the most part published already in 1840/41, were later substantively reworked by Liszt, and the collection enlarged by two numbers, until it received its final form in 1855. For the revision of the Henle Urtext edition, it was possible for the first time to also take into account the engraver?s copy of the first edition that was once again accessible. The resulting modification in the weighting of the sources and further important new findings in Liszt research are presented in detail in the preface and the comments. We were able to enlist the Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi for the fingerings.

Besides the popular Consolations it also includes Liszt’s delightful piano arrangements of Hungarian folk music and simplified versions he made of various pieces. Des oeuvres pour orgue de Liszt sont faits saillants de la littérature de l'orgue romantique virtuose. (Version for piano solo) and other works. Supplementary Volume 15 of the New Liszt Edition contains both earlier versions of published works and also several works that remained as manuscript. The most extensive work in this volume is the earliest known draft of the Piano Concerto in A major (written in 1839 for solo piano). Not only does the draft give insight into the process of the work?s genesis, but it also holds its own as a work for piano solo. Additionally, the volume contains several shorter works, such as a piano transcription of Robert Schumann?s Lied Widmung, which shows how original Liszt?s interpretations were, and also two early drafts of the Zweite Elegie dedicated to Lina Ramann (a former pupil of Liszt?s and his first biographer). The latter have been published in facsimile. Supplementary Volume 15 features a detailed preface in German, English and Hungarian, which reveals valuable details on each work. The cloth-bound version also has critical notes in English.

Liszt wrote his two Ballades in 1845 49 and 1853 during a time of personal turmoil. The successful virtuoso increasingly saw himself as a composer who strove after formal clarity as shown by the Bminor sonata that was also composed in 1853. When Liszt began work on the first Ballade he had just separated from his mistress of many years Marie Comtesse d’Agoult. He called the first sketches for the work DernièresIllusions. A better-known work is the second Ballade in B minor with whose ending he struggled (the two fortissimo endings in Liszt’s autograph have been published for the first time in the appendix to ouredition).
