Ce cahier a pour but de replacer les traits d'orchestre dans leur contexte musical. Il permet de préparer les passages difficiles que nous pouvons rencontrer à l'orchestre ou lors de concours et ainsi d'avoir une meilleure connaissance de ce qui les environne. Connaître et s'approprier ce contexte permet d'intégrer et de travailler ces passages de manière plus approfondie et ainsi de les maîtriser avec plus d'aisance.
Par ailleurs, on peut aussi voir ces partitions comme des pièces à part entière et les proposer dans un programme de concert ou comme un travail d'étude du répertoire avec de grands élèves.
Ce cahier est essentiellement axé sur des passages que l'on pourra qualifier de virtuoses dans le répertoire orchestral du basson, et permet ainsi d'associer un travail technique à un travail musical.
