The first volume of the Complete Flute Method by Giuseppe Gariboldi this edition has been reviewed and edited by Jan Merry. The finger positions articulations and breathing have been added to the method where necessary as well as some helpful advice has been included. Giuseppe Gariboldi (1833-1905) is an Italian flautist and composer who wrote numerous pieces for Flute. Giulio Briccialdi (1818-1881) was born in Terni Italy in the Papal States and studied flute with his father until the age of 14. Following the passing of his father Briccialdi moved to Rome where he studied composition and was appointed to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia as flute teacher. He would ultimately go on to teach flute to Italian royalty including the king's brother. He also toured as a performer throughout Europe and America and finally settled in London becoming a director of the flutemaking firm Rudall and Rose. During this time he was responsible for several mechanical developments which are still in use today notably the B-flat lever. Outside ofBriccialdi's important contributions to flute instrument making this virtuoso arrangement of the popular theme would become one of his most enduring legacies. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.

Quatre Pièces pour trois Flûtes avec une 4è Flûte ad lib.-Flutes En Vacances by Jacques Castérède was written in 1962 for three or four Flutes. Each Flute part is quite difficult on this quartet and would be for advanced-intermediate / advanced flautists. This piece features four sections each one expressing a different mood: Flûtes Pastorales is quite calm with some enthusiastic highlights Flûtes Joyeuses reflects a very joyful part with a small dance in the middle Flûtes rêveuses sounds timeless and reminiscent of a theme of Castérède’s 'Twelve Studies' and Flûtes Légères has a fast and lightmelody. Jacques Castérède (1926-2014) is a renowned composer and pianist. He has won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953 and has composed numerous melodic pieces including ballets concertos symphonies ensemble and chamber music.

With music for Flute Quartets being most commonly rearranged for the ensemble it is unusual that a work is originally composed for that precise instrumentation. It is for that reason that Pierre Max Dubois' Quatuor for Flutes has been considerably well-received. As a student of Darius Milhaud Dubois brought ideas of Les Six of which Milhaud was a member into the mid-1900s. Dubois' compositions are characteristically light with interesting and unusual harmonic and melodic textures as conveyed in this Quatuor for Flutes. With all four parts being technically demanding exploiting extendedtechniques to the maximum this piece provides a challenging but enjoyable performance. Moreover including a full score and separate parts this edition is ideal. With few pieces for this instrumentation exisitng as original compositions all Flute Quartets must ensure they try out Dubois' enticing four-movement piece.
