Introductie en variaties over het Dies Irae-De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500 a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations in randon order - however each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV) who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013.

Bach était depuis peu au service du duc de Weimar lorsqu?il accepta en 1713 une invitation à Weißenfels pour l?anniversaire du duc Christian de Saxe-Weißenfels. À cette occasion il composa la Cantate de la chasse une cantate de félicitations à l?adresse du duc passionné de chasse. Par la suite Bachremania cette cantate pour célébrer d?autres fêtes et anniversaires. La Cantate de la chasse est orchestrée pour quatre voix solistes incarnant des figures mythologiques (Diane Pales Endymion et Pan) un ensemble orchestral assez large (incluant des flûtes/flûtes à bec des hautbois et des cors) et un Chœur mixte. Le texte chantant les vertus de la chasse est un panégyrique à peine déguisé du duc régnant. Accompagnée par deux flûtes (flûtes à bec) Palès déesse des troupeaux et des pâtures entonne l?air Sheep May Safely Graze. Bien que de caractère profane le texte utilise l?image du berger comme l?image même de la grâce en référence à une parole fondamentale de Jésus.

Originellement pour Chœur mixte et Orchestre ou Orgue Robert van Beringen en a réalisé cet arrangement pour Orchestre d?Harmonie et Chœur (ad lib.).

Cradle Hymn, a Christmas lullaby with imagery of Mary and her infant, was written for the Nidaros Cathedral Girl's Choir and conductor Anita Brevik in 2010, and later arranged for SATB and TTBB chorus. The Lyrics were written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). This arrangement was written by Christian Aftreth Eriksen in 2021, commissioned by Bunberry High School, Australia. It is scored for large concert band, but is playable for smaller forces through clever cross cuing: Eb clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Contrabassson and Double Bass can all be considered ad lib. All Oboes, Bass Clarinet, Bassoons and all Horns are cross cued. A Soprano Saxophone part is provided to cover the Oboe solos, and should only be used if no Oboes are available. Par DE HAAN JACOB. The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one, and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion, ” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together. ” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals. ” His vision is rejected, and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury, ” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep, ” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In the second movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world. ” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast, which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. She then populates the earth by giving birth to an enormous race. A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. 'Onward Christian Soldiers' was the result. It soon became very popular though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular for current generations again for years. Onward!

The tradition of the Christmas tree in Western Europe dates back to a time long before any Christianization had taken place. During the severely cold winter nights so it was believed evil spirits tried to ?kill? nature. Needle-leaved trees were the only ones which kept their green colour throughout the year and therefore became symbols of immortality. These ?living? trees said to be the work of benign spirits were brought into people?s houses to ward off evil life-threatening powers. In the 14th century people first started to decorate Christmas trees. It was a pagan custom originated by the inhabitants of Alsace. This custom was taken over by the Church in thecourse of the 15th and 16th century. At first the decoration consisted mainly of edibles such as apples and wafers but later small presents were added. Legend has it that the reformer Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. The flickering candle flames were meant to create the image of a starry sky in which Christ?s apparition could be recognized. The German organ-player Ernst Anschütz from Leipzig was the first person to notate the song ?O Tannenbaum? the melody being a well-known folk song. Next to ?Stille Nacht? ?O Tannenbaum? is the most famous German Christmas song now known throughout the world. In the United States of America the melody of ?O Tannenbaum? has even been used in four States (among which the State of Maryland) for their State song. In David Well?s arrangement the song is first heard as many of us know it. After this introduction however it is transformed into a solid rock version and the beat has been changed. In the second part the familiar three-four time is back but here the rhythm is different from the original. After the richly ornamented rock beat the basic theme can be heard once again and the composition is concluded in a festive manner.

En 1865, l\'année de ce trio, la mère de Brahms, Christiane, meurt. On sait qu\'il avait des sentiments profonds pour elle. Le mouvement lent porte l?indication de tempo Adagio Mesto (triste) et peut être considéré comme un chant de lamentation pour sa mère. L\'?uvre a été exécutée pour la première fois le 28 novembre 1865 à Zurich et a été publiée un an plus tard, en novembre 1866. Dans cette version pour orchestre d?harmonie, Kevin Houben reste aussi fidèle que possible à l\'original. Le résultat est une orchestration profonde et sombre du merveilleux Adagio Mesto.
