Petr Cajkovskij besass nicht nur franzosische Wurzeln. Von Kindheit an wuchs er in engem Kontakt zur franzosischen Kultur auf, die ihn zeitlebens fesseln sollte. Der Komponist hielt sich immer wieder in Paris auf, machte Bekanntschaft mit den Grossen des dortigen Musiklebens und traumte davon, eine Oper fur die franzosischen Buhnen zu komponieren. Der Band rekonstruiert neben diesen biographischen Aspekten die franzosische Cajkovskij-Rezeption zwischen 1877 und 1900 mit ihren verschiedenen Stationen, Protagonisten und asthetischen Positionen. Es wird gezeigt, wie die anfanglich begeisterte Aufnahme des Komponisten in den franzosisch-russischen Salons der 1880er Jahre in eine Ablehnung umschlagt, die das stereotype Bild vom Trivialmusiker Cajkovskij vorwegnimmt. In Cajkovskijs Oeuvre hat der Bezug zu Frankreich gleichwohl deutliche Spuren hinterlassen. Dargestellt wird eine ganz Gruppe von Kompositionen, die fur franzosische Interpreten oder Auftraggeber geschaffen wurden. Einen Schlussel zum Verstandnis von Cajkovskijs Musik bietet auch seine Auseinandersetzung mit franzosischer Musik von Hector Berlioz uber Georges Bizet bis zu Camille Saint-Saens. Anhand der franzosischen Musikzitate, die in seinen Werken immer wieder begegnen, kann schliesslich Cajkovskij Umgang mit fremder Musik und die Herausbildung einer hybriden musikalischen Sprache analysiert werden.

Als Alexander III. 1881 den Zarenthron bestieg, begann fur die russische Oper eine neue, oft als Goldenes Zeitalter' bezeichnete Epoche, in der Cajkovskij zum fuhrenden Komponisten aufstieg. Die vom Zaren eingeleitete Reform der Kaiserlichen Theater, zu denen seinerzeit in Petersburg italienische und russische Oper, Ballett sowie russisches, deutsches und franzosisches Drama gehorten, fuhrte zu einer nachhaltigen Umstrukturierung der Theaterhierarchie. Die russische Oper holte in kurzester Zeit Entwicklungen nach, wie sie fur die Pariser Grand opera' charakteristisch waren. Die Arbeit beleuchtet Institutionen und Auffuhrungspraxis, die Auseinandersetzung der russischen Komponisten mit der Grand opera und mit Richard Wagner und die zeitgenossischen Werke im Kontext der genannten Reformen. Ein umfangreicher Anhang bietet bisher unbekannte Quellentexte, Premierendaten und Auffuhrungsstatistiken.
