Standard US Set (without european suppl. parts)-Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets Horn Trombone and Tuba or Baritone) spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups like the Brass quintets play in the concertante style particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time each movement contains individual solo passages(for example Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles orchestras and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

Score-Leonardo Balada's Sonata For Ten Winds (Flute (Piccolo) 2 Trumpets in C Oboe 2 Horns in F Clarinet in Bb Trombone Bassoon Bass Trombone).This work was premiered by the American Brass Quintet and the New York Wind Quintet on March 18 1980 at Carnegie Recital Hall New York. The Inferno is the first movement of Robert W. Smith's four-movement work The Divine Comedy based on Dante Alighieri's literary classic of the same name. Dante's vision of hell consists of nine concentric circles divided into four categories of sin. Originally a pianist heswitched to clarinet when he was inspired by Benny Goodman but he also plays jazz bassoon. Lyons has performed with Orchestras and ensembles throughout the world both in live performance and on broadcasts and recordings. Hehas written a book on Soviet international policy. If you or your students began your clarinet career on a Clarineo a scaled-down instrument appropriate for younger students then you have Lyons to thank as he is its inventor.

African Dances is a continuous work for solo clarinet and wind ensemble consisting of five individual sections. The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree and its subsequent development into the instrument we know today. Each movement draws on different aspects of Pan-African music ranging from the styles and forms of the African choral tradition through to the complex cross-rhythms and patterns that characterise so much of the music of Africa.
