Carcassi was born in Florence, Italy, and first studied the piano, but learned guitar when still a child. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso concert guitarist. He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget. From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli. Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. After a short return to performing in 1836, he quit his concert practice around 1840 and died in Paris in 1853. His most famous works are collected in his 25 Etudes op. 60. In these, he managed to blend technical skills and brilliant romantic music. This is the reason his music is still played by so many classical guitarists today.

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.
The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

Bei der Arbeit am 'Siebengesang' setzte ich mir zum Ziele, die vielschichtigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen einem Individuum (dem Solisten) und seiner Umwelt (dem Orchester) aufzuzeigen und daraus formgebende satztechnische Impulse zu gewinnen.Das Werk 'Siebengesang' ist 7teilig: in den drei ersten Teilen treten sich das Soloinstrument und verschiedene selbstandige, nach Register und Klangfarben geordnete Orchestergruppen gegenuber. Im 4. Teil durchdringen sich Solooboe und ein Ensemble von 4 linearen Instrumenten. Der 5. Teil ist ein grossangelegtes Orchester-Crescendo. Uber 23 von Gong-Signalen markierten 5-Sekunden-Abschnitten werden nach und nach die verschiedenen Orchestergruppen (jede mit individuellem Tempo) ubereinander geschichtet. Der 6. Teil konfrontiert mit Hilfe eines im Innern des Instrumentes angebrachten Mikrophons verstarkten und verzerrten Oboenklang mit dem ganzen Orchester, wobei die neuen, ungewohnten Klange der Oboe das Klangspektrum des Orchesters in grossem Masse beeinflussen. Auf knappstem Raum werden hier in hektischem Wechsel die aussersten strukturellen Gegensatze zusammengedrangt. Im sehr ruhigen Schlussteil vervielfacht sich die Oboenpartie in 7 Singstimmen, denen als phonetisches Material die Schlussverse von Georg Trakls Gedicht 'Siebengesang des Todes' zugrunde liegen [.].-Heinz Holliger

This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozartâ??s fragmentary â??Requiemâ? as well as an alternative to the traditional SüÃ?mayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozartâ??s idiom taking into account historical additions by SüÃ?mayr and Eybler.

When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozartâ??s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the â??Requiemâ? fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition.

At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from SüÃ?mayrâ??s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozartâ??s intentions: the â??Lacrimosaâ? may end with or without â??Amenâ? fugue, and the â??Sanctusâ? may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Above all, this makes it possible to retain the B-flat major â??Hosannaâ? from SüÃ?mayrâ??s autograph, a movement which, until now, has not been appreciated as compositionally flawless.
