The Stabat Mater is considered to be of 13th century Franciscan origin. In the 15th century it was used as a sequence in connection with the new mass of the compassion of the Virgin Mary and became an official part of the Roman liturgy in 1727.Picturing the darkest hour in the passion story the poet poignantlydescribes Mary the mother of Christ broken by suffering weepingat the foot of the cross.The setting by Pergolesi composed in Naples Italy shortly before hisdeath from tuberculosis at the young age of 26 is recognized as amasterpiece. Pergolesi has cleverly combined 2 styles: the learnedcounterpoint of the style Antico and the new decorative languageof the Neopolitan opera. Composer/critic Jean-Jacques Rousseau calledthe opening movement 'the most perfect and touching duet to come fromthe pen of any composer'. The final amen can be heard at the end ofthe movie Amadeus. From Songs Of Peace-The 14th-century Eucharistic text ‘Ave verum’ has been set to music by many composers over the centuries no doubt drawn to its vivid and powerful imagery. Todd first set the words (for SATB choir) in 2001 but this different setting is the fourth movement of a larger work Songs of Peace which was written in 2012 in memory of the composer’s mother. The unison first verse is introduces the beautiful melody which fits naturally into the lush harmony supplied in the piano part. A second often imitative part is added for the second verse though the piece doesn’t stray too far from its very approachable nature. There is occasional optional further divisi which adds extraharmonic effects when included.

He composed music almost entirely for the Anglican church and his works are frequently performed there. His goal throughout his working life was to raise the standard of country cathedral music in England.
