In the second half of his life, Moeran greatly extended his sensibilities and his musical palate to include more energetic and vigorous rhythms, harmonic colours and tonalities. In the Sonata for ViolonCello and Piano, the listener will find grandeur in the first movement and an intricate rondo in the finale. It is a piece by a composer who has taken an expansive step beyond his immediate surroundings and first influences.E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk and influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer's main body of work. Moeran tended toward thesmaller ensembles in his compositions, which gave an appropriate frame for his lyric gifts.

Per Norgard 's Gennem Torne / Through Thorns (2003) Harp Concerto No. 2 - Passage for Harp Solo with Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet. Premiered by Tine Rehling (Harp) and the Esbjerg Ensemble, conducted by Kaisa Roose at the Concert Hall of the Western Jutland Academy of Music, Esbjerg, 28th January 2004. Programme Note THROUGH THORNS has a duration of about 20 minutes, in one continuous movement, thus the subtitle passage. The work is scored for harp solo, flute, clarinet and string quartet. The title is borrowed from the lines from an old Virgin Mary Hymn: Mary wanders through thorns, a hymn which ends with the following line: then roses grew forth amongst thethorns. I only came across the poem after finishing the composition, the passage of which is a journey of sometimes dramatic events, concluding with a rose-blooming, as does the hymn. For THROUGH THORNS to borrow its title from a Virgin Mary Hymn has to do with the musical material and current of the piece, which brings motives from an earlier choral piece of mine, FLOS UT ROSA (Latin for a flower like a rose), and the rose in question is of course the one which grew forth when the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Infant Jesus in a hitherto unheard-of fashion, a NOVA GENITURA (new birth), which is the title of another work of mine that also derives its material from my original rose-melody from 1975. THROUGH THORNS is dedicated to Tine Rehling, and together with her I have tried to expand the sonorities of the harp, by exploring existing techniques and their more remote regions, in order to gain access to new territory and new soundscaoes, as realised by the constantly experimentally-minded and virtuoso player. Quartetto Sereno - String Quartet No.21 Op.197 (op. posth.) by Vagn Holmboe.
Holmboe's last quartet work, which is unofficially also String Quartet No. 21, was the last work he ever composed, and was unfinished on his death in 1996. His pupil Per Nørgård has finished the quartet, and himself characterizes his contribution by saying that the score existed “in an only partly completed form, which could however be written out with only a few cases of doubt”. With only two movements and a playing time of about nine minutes it is at its existing length the shortest of Holmboe's stringquartets. The first movement takes the form of one long arch in a rocking triple time which constantly shifts among different tempo and pulse sensations. At the same time the rhythmic energy increases until the movement, in a faster Con moto tempo accelerates to a more flowing 12/8 time, coloured both rhythmically by cross-rhythms in duple time and timbrally by harmonics in the viola. In its middle section, Con fuoco, the movement culminates in both tempo and expression until it falls calm in brief recapitulations in reverse order of the first two sections. The rocking feeling continues in the second movement, but now at a more extroverted level from the outset, Allegro and pizzicato. The energy builds up further as the mood intensifies to Con fuoco, while all instruments go over to bowed playing, but like the first movement, this movement ends Adagio here however not as a gradual attenuation but through a sudden shift in tempo to a calm, imitative passage before the movement slowly thins out to the almost inaudible through a last, dense, open sounding chord with a brief violin solo above it.
The quartet is dedicated to Holmboe's wife MeLa May Holmboe, and was given its first performance by the Kontra Quartet on 22nd March 1997 at the Carl Nielsen Academy of.

Asbjorn Schaathun TRIPLIS+ (1996-98)For mezzo-soprano, percussion, electric organ, alto flute, coranglais, clarinet, violin, viola , cello, double-bass and piano.Triplis+ consists of seven songs based on computer-manipulated text fragments from Wilhelm Muller's 'Die schone Mullerin'. The seven songs should be played without interruption:I) Warum nicht?II)Nicht so...III)AngstIV) Wohin?V) HeimatVI) StilleVII)RuhigThe score of TRIPLIS+ has a long history. The whole project began as a piece for piano and mezzo, DUALIS (1987), to which I added percussion instruments to the vocal and piano parts, which was deeply unsatisfying. (I also suggested certain ways of making different versions of the piece, a so-called 'open score', but this was even worse...) From the ruins of this piece I carved out a new DUALIS (1991), using the same material, but with no percussion instruments added and in the form of a traditional 'frozen' score. In 1993 I was asked to include a separate percussion part for a trio-version of my first undertakings of DUALIS. In close collaboration with the Cikada Trio I created a new version, TRIPLIS (1993) which then in turn was taken as a point of departure for an extended version of the piece called TRIPLIS+ (1996-99). In this 'version integrale', I - due to the requirements of the commission - added an ensemble of 8 instruments, sometimes elaborating material from the mezzo-line, sometimes contradicting or commenting upon it. The piano has a special role in both TRIPLIS+ and TRIPLIS; functioning as a kind of 'libro', the piano textures, which have the feel of an accompanying part, are played ad lib throughout the work. In this way the pianist can change the actual dramatical flow of the piece. The first performance of TRIPLIS+ took place in the Bjergsted Music Centre in Stavanger, Norway in April 1999, with the commissioner, Stavanger Contemporary Music Ensemble under direction of the composer. The score is dedicated to B.Asbjorn Schaathun.
