The thoroughly edited scores follow essentially the first edition printed by John Walsh in London in 1729. Baston was regarded as an excellent recorder and flute player who worked with London opera orchestras in the early 18th century. His easy concertos anticipating the elegant melody of the early classical period enjoy great popularity representing a rewarding task for music school orchestras and advanced recorder players.

The rediscovery of this concerto by the Bohemian composer is certainly a surprise for the violists particularly since there is only very little original literature from the classical epoch. As violist of the Dresden court orchestra, Joseph Schubert writes a very skilful solo part suitable for the instrument adding vigorous melody and harmonic abundance which reminds of Mozart. In this edition, the original cadences and diminutions appear unchanged.

In this symphony, C.Ph.E. Bach appears as pioneer of the Viennese Classicism. Just in the first movement, we encounter a theme of individual form, a seven-bar (!) combination of syncopated tone repetition with smallsegmented triad splitting. The fact that the material of the whole movement is won from that, is a principle which was often used in the classical period.

Franz Benda belongs to the so-called Berlin or North German School which became extremely significant in the second half of the 18th century particularly in the field of instrumental music and which made the transition from the baroque to the classical period together with the Mannheim School. In the works of the Berlin School, the strict counterpoint of the predecessors is loosened by a freer and melodically pleasant, almost „galant“ style and often even completely displaced.

The Roads Round Pisa was composed in 2013 by Danish composer Niels Marthinsen . Marthinsen does not care particularly for traditional genre divisions and his music interweaves solid classical instrumentation with virtually all types of popular music held together by a clear sense of line and an advanced sense of musical form and timing.

A brilliant, early classical work that can also be performed by a string quartet. Carl Stamitz indicated exactly in his Quartetto Concertante which sections of the individual parts have to be scored for solos and tutti. With the work's being scored for chorus, there is the possibility of an extremely charming interplay.

Among his orchestral works, the symphonies (Wq 182) are certainly those with which C.Ph.E. Bach advances farthest into new ground in music. Contrast and surprise as well as the permanent change of affections are the essential principles of this music.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony, melodies and his passion for ornithology, his Illuminations of the Beyond for Orchestra is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed between 1987-1991, Illuminations of the Beyond was one of the composer's last works, with the premiere occuring six months after his death. The work includes Messiaen's popular compositional techniques, such as his modes of limited transposition, and the use of birdsong. Messiaen's piece for orchestra is divided in to eleven movements and a typical performance lasts about one hour. Illuminations of the Beyond is essential to all advanced orchestras seeking to expand and vary their repertoire..

According to new research by the present editor, however, it can be attributed to the Catalan composer Juan Bautista Pla, who lived in the middle of the eighteenth century. Pla worked as an oboist at the Portuguese Royal Court an was a member of the Wurttemberg court orchestra under Niccolo Jomelli in Stuttgart from 1755-66.

Mozart's Early Quartet collection is recognized as a crown of string chamber music. This accessible arrangement, from an arranger recognized for his careful and creative adaptations, is very true to the original. An interesting bass part has been added, and the more taxing rhythms, accidentals and embellishments have been simplified. Playable by younger players, yet advanced students also will find this piece delightfully satisfying---even challenging---when played at a faster tempo. Here's a centerpiece for any string orchestra concert program! Correlates with String Explorer Book One, unit 13. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Though A.E. Brachvogel's portrayal of the failed genius in his biography about W.F. Bach drew an impressive picture of the inner turmoil of the eldest Bach son's personality, it is rather unproductive for the understanding of his music. However, legends often or mostly contain a core of truth: There is no doubt that the highly gifted musician failed because of the overwhelming example of his father (as composer) particularly since he was on the threshold from one epoch to another. In the adagio, both flute parts rising above the string orchestra are assigned a quality of expression that can already be related to the sentimental age whereas the second movement, a more or less strict string fugue, is rooted in the tradition-conscious baroque period.
