Bernard Scherr has arranged six lovely Portuguese Folksongs for Brass Quintet entitled: 1. Mourisca do Santo Joao de Braga (Moorish architechture of Saint John of Braga) as a march 2. A Pastorinha (The Shepherdess) - a lovely andantino 3. O Xi-Xi (Wee-wee) - a silly song 4. O ai, o linda! (Oh, the beauty!) - a lyrical romance 5. Coradinha (The blushing one) - a dance-like jaunt 6. Carro amaricano (American Car) - driving around in the auto These Portuguese folksongs contain many words and phrases that are associated with certain regions of Portugal. These folksongs come from northern Portugal and were collected during the first half of the 20th century. They represent, though, an earlier tradition stretching back into the 19th century and earlier. Some of these titles are terms of endearment (A Pastorinha, O Xi-Xi, and O ai, o linda), of something new and exciting (Carro amaricano), of dance (Coradinha), or of something that is not easily translated (Mourisca-referring either to architecture, a dance, or a local folk deity). These arrangements capture the charming melodies, woven throughout the group, and contain inventive harmonies and imitations. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone & Tuba. For advanced performers.

“French composer Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer, conductor, teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional, Cantecor for Horn and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Cantecor, Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated, yet true to the 19th Century French tradition. Elements include chromaticism, exploitation of tonality, complex rhythms and significant tempo changes, among other aspects. For all advanced horn players, Büsser's Cantecor is essential for a varied repertoire.â€.

Forsyth's Modern Wind Music is a series of volumes containing exciting and challenging, but not unduly difficult, works by talented English composers of current or recent vintage for recital, study or recreation. Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument. In this volume for horn two aubades by David Ellis and John Golland (Ascent) reflect traditional associations of the instrument, whilst Anthony Gilbert's Two Birds by Kuring-Gai show the horn in an unusual guise and where written whilst the composer was living in the spectacular landscape of New South Wales. James Langley's music is well known to horn players and his fanfare-like Caccia for solo horn and Trident for three horns are both welcome additions to a slender repertory.
