The text is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet and the Orthodox FuneralService. The work was first performed at the funeral of Diana Princess of Wales in September 1997 under the title Alleluia. O magnum mysterium. for high treble solo and SATB unaccompanied Set in four parts, this atmospheric carol unfolds simply, from stillness and silence, in awe and contemplation. The choral writing is punctuated with a high solo voice singing phrases that call to mind fragments of the plainsong chant on the same text, appointed as a Responsary for Christmas Day.
