Its expression is shaped by violent changes of tempo and dynamics, clashes between brilliant passagework and distinct articulation, on the one hand, and lyrical phrases, on the other, and a constant contrast between intense sonorities and light textures. The work?s concise form consigns it to the catalogue of so-called miniature pieces. Subito for violin and piano was composed in 1992 for the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. This arrangement for clarinet expands the instrument?s solo repertoire with a work of the highest compositional calibre, representing a mature stage in Witold Lutoslawski?s oeuvre. Among clarinettists, the composer is known principally for the Dance Preludes, which appear both on concert bills and also on the programmes of competitions and auditions. Davies's feeling for the potency and bravura of the clarinet goes back to works of the 1960s; his concerto for the instrument is predictably a big ranging piece in two linked movements. The first fast with a brief slowintroduction has the soloist in propulsive melodic flights slipping over into florid runs but it is a virtuoso piece for the orchestra especially for the marimba and pair of horns. The Adagio that follows is in the spare cold birdcall-riven style of other recent Davies slow movements exploiting first the clarinet's low register and then at its climax the instrument's high extremes. A cadenza leads to the coda where Davies introduces a Scots tune previously hinted at with which he brings the work to an end in F sharp major.Clarinet part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

This work which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost but wasrediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983.'This is a dramatic emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near theend. Then comes a quick movement a kind of demonic scherzo including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity though not before exceedingly testing times for bothplayers.Duration c. 25mins.

Par XIAO XINZHOU. Duet for Clarinet and Piano 'Subconscioius light' by XIAO Xinzhou. From the composer: 'The word 'subconscious' came from the book 'The Aesthetic Unconsciousness' by Jacques Rancière. The 'light' of this piece comes from an accidental feeling that I try to grasp but is elusive... It seems that neither 'subconscious' nor 'light' can directly feel its concrete existence in music, and the connection between them seems indistinctive or ambiguous. To express the feeling of the relationship between these two concepts in my mind, I used my work to compose a world, deconstructed, extracted and reconstructed the integer multiple harmonics of note D in the writing process, therefore, condensing them into the pitch material of this piece and cast them on the dynamic textures. These textures take a large portion of the whole music, constantly evolving under control, which can be viewed as the intention of grasping something.
