Text by Thomas Troeger.
“Disturbed by light,†the shepherds, the magi, and we ourselves ask, “Why risk the night, the winds that blow? Why risk the way we do not know?†The answer is in the coda: because “every beat of our hearts insists we go!†As is consistently the case, Sally Ann Morris’s music paints text exquisitely.

Having been interested in Mahayana Buddhism for a number of years, I went to a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York to study meditation in 1999. One evening, while walking alone by the side of the lake, I caught the sight of a 'V'shape floating and extending on the surface of the water. It was a beaver taking a swim under the moon. This image gave me insight into my relationship with silence: underneath the music is a profoundly deep silence upon which I seekto inscribe my signature through sound. It serves as a point of departure that led to a series of works. In Lakescape V, the tranquility in the original 'lake' series is disturbed by showers of 'phonetic particles' taken from Wai-lim Yip's poetry (in both English and Chinese) as the piece traverses through different states of mind.Lakescape V was written for and dedicated to loadbang who gave its world premiere at the Miller Theatre's Composer Portrait on November 17th, 2016.- Lei Liang.

The violist Barbara Maurer communicates her experience of many years as a leading performer of advanced contemporary music: The second half of the 20th century was a very prolific time in which a rich palette of new sound phenomena arose. Particularly inventive music is mostly found wherever a composer does not let himself be disturbed by what the performer considers possible. Everything that is possible with strings, wood and 150 horsehairs will amaze string players, composers and listeners. In four fundamental chapters, she goes even further and imparts basic knowledge for all musicians who want to work not only on contemporary music, but also on the very newest ensemble works.I particularly like the dynamics chart as it shows the author has an excellent grasp of stringed instrument limits. Aimed for the composer, if offers practical assistance to the performer as well. The charts and illustrations are easy to understand. In German only ...(Susan Pierotti, Stringendo)New for Strings and more.

Monumentum, Music for String Sextet, was written in 2014 to a commission from the Moritzburg Festival, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center New York and the Kathe Kollwitz House in Moritzburg. It is dedicated to the cellist Jan Vogler. The world premiere took place on 19 August 2014 at the Moritzburg Festival, performed by Timothy Chooi & Mira Wang (violins), Roberto Diaz & Hartmut Rohde (violas), Jan Vogler & Harriet Krijgh (cellos). The American premiere took place on 7 May 2015 in the Lincoln Center with the Amphion String Quartet, the violist Yura Lee and the cellist Jan Vogler. The String Sextet Momentum commemorates the outbreak of the First World War, the death of Peter Kollwitz – who died as a volunteer, aged just 18, in the early weeks of the war – and the manner in which his mother, the artist Kathe Kollwitz, mourned the loss of her son. The artist worked through her pain by creating her most famous sculpture, The Mourning Parents. It stands today at the German soldiers’ cemetery at Vladslo in western Flanders, where her son Peter also lies buried. During the 18 years that she worked on the Parents, Kathe Kollwitz attended several concerts at the Volksbuhne in Berlin, where from January to February 1927 she heard Arthur Schnabel’s cycle of all the Beethoven piano sonatas. Schnabel performed the Sonata op. 111 in c minor on 26 February 1927, and this work touched her in particular, as we can read in her diary: “The strange flickering notes turned into flames – a moment of rapture, taking one into a different sphere, and the heavens opened almost as in the Ninth (Symphony). Then one found one’s way back – but it was a return after having been assured that there is a heaven. These notes are serene – confident – and good. Thank you, Schnabel!” This encounter with Beethoven’s last sonata inspired the artist to take up work again on her sculpture after a long interruption and to consider different possibilities for arranging the two figures. For this reason, the first minutes ofMomentum are derived from this sonata by Beethoven – though without it being quoted in an audible manner – and they leave their mark on the form of the Sextet. The number 18 and the date of Peter Kollwitz’s death (23 October 1914) also have a direct impact on the work’s dramaturgy. This music is mostly calm in nature, but is time and again interrupted unexpectedly, being disturbed by unruly sounds and vehement eruptions until time itself seems to dissolve in an aleatoric passage. The work ends with an extended lament on “seed corn should not be ground”, a line from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Journeyman Years. Kathe Kollwitz often quoted this phrase to argue for peace, and also took it as the title for a lithograph that she made in 1942. - David Philip Hefti

MAYKA (Serbian for “motherâ€) is a fascinating collection of 10 short recital pieces, each inspired by Serbian folk-music traditions, enriched through a broad variety of non-traditional techniques. Serbian-born flutist Jovana Damnjanović created these teaching etudes in conjunction with her doctoral thesis introducing Eastern European traditions to Western flutists. Along with its 10 fresh and dazzling concert works, this publication includes a thorough preface on performance techniques and instructions for each etude.MAYKA attempts to represent the sounds of traditional Serbian music and also make them more familiar and accessible to flute players around the world. The overarching inspiration for the sound is one of the most popular instruments in Serbian traditional music: the frula. Inspirations from the tone colors of other instruments such as duduk, cevara, dvojnice, and kaval are also present. To read more about these instruments, refer to Chapter 1: Introduction (pg. 13-16) in the online dissertation. My intention was to create an original work exclusively for flute that holds characteristics of Serbian traditional music. An imitation of one of the Serbian traditional song forms can be found in “ČоÄek;†irregular time signatures can be found in “Igra,†“ČоÄek,†and “Vez.†The style is mostly present through trills, ornaments, and tonality, which are ubiquitous characteristics of Serbian traditional music. Each of the concert etudes has a narrative. The reason for narrative is to bring the style closer to the performer, and to help with understanding each etude’s expressive significance. Some etudes were inspired by people and events, some by specific dances, music, and literature from Serbia. As the etudes are of programmatic nature, they are a great choice for themed recitals. The idea was to write pieces short enough to be good program-fillers, not too hard to put together yet effective, and also suitable for short performances in venues that do not have a piano. To read more about each etude’s narrative, refer to Chapter 3: Performance Guide (pg. 24-75) in the dissertation. The book is titled MAYKA, Serbian for mother, to honor my mother, my mother’s mother, and my Motherland, Serbia. Motherland is represented through the style and tonal language of all of the concert etudes, and my mother and grandmother have been the biggest inspiration for the narrative of “Svila,†“Nana,†and “Uspavanka.â€.

The Sea of Stars is a popular tourist destination on the island of Vaadhoo in the Maldives. Special phytoplankton called dinoflagellates turn blue when disturbed, a process called bioluminenscence. As the waves break and crash against the shore, the water turns a sparkling blue, as if the stars are being reflected in the water. The opening of this piece imitates the shimmering water as a nostalgic tune is presented by a solo cello over delicate harmonics and tremolo. As the music swells and accelerates, the flowing theme is passed around the orchestra until a final climactic statement brings back the opening material. The piece ends as quietly and magically as it started.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. The piece ends with a repeated cadence of morning light. (From the performance notes.).

Manfred Trojahn on the origin and title of his impressive virtuoso solo work:Admittedly I do not know if he had seagulls, but since Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, he will not have gone through life without at least the impression of the cry of seagulls. Nor do I know if seagulls played any part in his life in Rome. I myself was astonished when, one or two years ago in the Villa Massimo, I was, not exactly annoyed but disturbed by the strong rhythmical cry of seagulls. I was just about to write a bassoon solo when the seagulls started. Then the idea came to me that precisely this sequence of notes could serve as the basis of the work. And the sequence for the bassoon solo is, in turn, the basis of the piece for violoncello - this is how titles are born... Of course the violoncello meanders with virtuosic ease from the seagull motif to the 'elf-like' skittering brought to music by Mendelssohn and used time and again in his compositions, finally becoming a cabaletta. Now, cabalettas are not very representative of Mendelssohn, but as I was composing I definitely wanted to put a cabaletta in this passage. I am sure Mendelssohn and I will easily agree on this, especially since later justice is done to him in the rapid passages and, of course in the tonal cadenza at the very end, which is more indicative of his time than of mine ... isn't it?
