Score and Parts-In honour of their 75th anniversary the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra commissioned a number of composers who had written major works for them in the past to write short musical 'postcards'. Morton Gould said of his:'Mypostcard is called Minute Plus Waltz Rag; it's a slight take-off on 'The Minute Waltz' but with the 'plus' that it's longer than a minute and combines a waltz with a rag pattern in 5/8 time. I wasn't consciously thinking of 1916when I wrote it but it does actually reflect a flavour of that time.' This is the Schirmer edition of the Score and Parts.

| Silvestre Revueltas:
Sensemay? (1938):
Orchestra: Score Orchestre Schirmer
Score-Silvestre Revueltas' âSensemayaâ was written in 1937 for chamber...(+)
Score-Silvestre Revueltas' âSensemayaâ was written in 1937 for chamber orchestra; one year later the composer transcribed it for a huge orchestra of twenty-seven wind instruments fourteen percussion instruments and strings. The rhythms are laid out precisely and have considerable visceral impact very much in a manner that recalls Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. However Revueltas' masterful orchestration and ability to evoke the ancient Maya civilization with decidedly modern music are uniquely his own. It is a unique orchestral spectacle something only Revueltas could have written and in its way it is one of the most brutal works of its time. The workbegins with a low note in the bassoon as the percussion plays the sinuous syncopated rhythm that drives the work. Soon a solo horn enters playing the first of this work's two major themes a muscular ominous motif. Other horns join the first one to play the theme growing louder and more emphatic but rigorously yoked to the underlying rhythm. Eventually the horns blast as loudly as they can with obsessive trills on the bassoon far underneath and the violins enter with the slashing second theme. The horns take up this new theme and bring it to a climax after which the music returns to its opening texture. This recapitulation brings with it a mood of foreboding. The rhythm becomes even more obsessive and finally the music reaches a massive climax during which both themes are played overlapping sometimes in part and sometimes in whole by woodwinds brass and violins in what sounds like a musical riot. The coda feels like the final dropping of a knife.

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. One of his most enjoyable compositions is The Mannheim Rocket commissioned by the Mannheim orchestra in the year 2000. It takes inspiration from theRocket of the title – a famous compositional device invented by the orchestra in the 1700s. From there it swiftly traverses 200 years of German music cleverly hiding quotes from some of the most famous orchestralworks of the era rising to its zenith before falling back to earth – exactly as a real rocket would. Described by the composer as a “marvellous journey” this orchestral piece is one of the mostentertaining in the repertoire – both to play and to listen to.

Score-Morton Gould's Fall River Legend ballet suite for Orchestra. Study score.Fall River Legend was commissioned by Ballet Theatre with choreography by Agnes de Mille music byMorton Gould and sets by Oliver Smith and recieved its world premiere performance at the Metropolitan Opera House New York on April 22 1948.Having selected for her subject the historical Lizzie Borden murder case deMille used both pantomime and ballet techniques to convey the story. Morton Gould created the musical score in a similar way alternating programmatic sections with more formal dance patterns. The set dance movements formthe basis of this orchestral suite omitting most of the purely dramatic sequences.A feeling of austerity and doom opens the Prologue followed by a group of Waltzes depicting Lizzie's childhood. The sadness of Lizzie'sgirlhood is reflected in the nostalgic Elegy. Church social is a setting for a parish dance and Hymnal Variations suggest the old New England hymn tunes. The festive Cotillion is an exhuberant sequence of dancing patterns.Epilogue returns to the foreboding mood of the prologue.

Score and Parts-Charles Ives' Postlude In F for Orchestra. Score and parts. The Postlude in F composed in 1895 is Charles Ives' earliest known work for large Orchestra. It is based on anearlier Organ piece which Ives performed at the Baptist Church in Danbury Conneticut on May 11 1890 (at the age of fifteen; on the cover page of the full score Ives mistakenly gave 1892 for the year of the Organcomposition). The version for Orchestra was probably produced as an orchestration assignment for a class of Horatio Parker Ives' teacher at Yale College. Ives recalled that the 'New Haven Orchestra' - that is the New Haven Symphony Orchestra organised by Parker in 1895- read through the work in 1896. The Postlude in F which was also preperation for work on the First Symphony (its first movement also completed in1895) contains some suprisingly mature and beautiful writing especially in the magical closing pages. - Kenneth D. Singleton.

Study Score No. 127-Charles Fussel's Three Processionals for Orchestra.Three Processionals is drawn from ideas contained in an earlier work by the composer Voyages based on the poetry of HartCrane.'In this work I was interested in connecting Hart Crane's use of sea images as a basic vocabulary for his cycle of love poems with Debussy's orchestral sea poem La Mer. The third processional concludes with adirect quote from Debussy. Hart Crane's poems in their profound concentrated language first warn the child that his beautiful and joyous seashore games touch a vast ocean whose depths are cruel And in the following poem loveitself is the great force which sweeps over and moves every aspect of life. To survive this 'tidal wedge' is a fearful and exhilarating struggle and we are frequently 'over-taken' by its power plus the knowledge of ourlimits'. - Charles Fussel

Score-Rossano Galante's The Redwoods for Orchestra. The Redwoods was commissioned in 1998 by the North Tonawanda High School Band under the direction of Norman Alexander.Thiswork inspired by the beauty power and majesty of the Redwood - the most remarkable of trees - begins with a heroic-romantic Trumpet melody accompanied by Woodwind arpeggios punctuated by Brass rhythms. After a transition theopening melody is followed by the rich lush main theme (m.29) which is stated by the Horns and Woodwinds. After the main theme has undergone variations in orchestration a new section follows (m.65) with the upperWoodwinds playing a second delicately stated theme reminiscent of a music box. The new theme is heard just once more (m.73) but played in a heroic manner by the Trumpets and Trombones in juxtaposition of the original 'music box'statement. The main theme recapitulates in a similar heroic manner (m.82) and as each theme returns it is heard with a change of instrumentation and accompaniment. After the final thematic statement a Brass fanfare bringsus to the end of the piece which culminates in a grand climax.

Score-John Jacob Niles' I Wonder As I Wander arranged for Orchestra.This Christ...(+)
Score-John Jacob Niles' I Wonder As I Wander arranged for Orchestra. This Christian folk hymn was inspired by a song heard by Niles at a fundraising meeting for evangelicals which he attendedin Murphy North Carolina. Niles wrote of the moment he first heard the tune:'A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes wereunbelievable dirty and ragged and she too was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins.... But best of all she was beautiful and in her untutored way she could sing. She smiled as she sang smiled rather sadly and sang only a single line of a song'.Niles requested that the girl repeat the fragment seven times paying her a quarter per performance and left with 'three lines of verse a garbled fragment ofmelodic materialâand a magnificent idea'. He completed his composition on October 4 1933 and I Wonder As I Wander was first performed on December 19 1933 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown North Carolina. This melodic arrangement by Michael Brown offers an opportunity for every group of instruments to shine making it an excellent choice for school concerts or showcases.
