In “A Green Voice,” spring is reborn after a period of cold desolation; wishes for nourishing light are granted as blooming trees foretell their abundance, and a lost memory is recovered with sweet music. From wintry breeze and silence to shining sun and colorful harmony, the piano creates a dynamic background as the choir sings a song of hope and regeneration. This work was commissioned for the Metropolitan Chorale of Iowa's Cedar Valley, an ensemble of amateur and professional singers of diverse ages and experiences.

Langston Hughes' poem is set for choir and piano exceptionally well by composer Anthony Bernarducci. The composer says, ??When beginning to set this short yet powerful poem, it became clear to me that each stanza had its own character contributing to the overall message.? For this reason, he set the music in a similar fashion. Each stanza has its own musical independence, but also deliberate 'connective tissue' to join the sections together. The text speaks a message of the strength of inner power. While the choir introduces the text, the cello plays a melody similar to the opening vocal solo meant to portray that our strength is always within us even in the moments of darkness. Masterfully written, this piece will be an impactful addition to your concert programming.

Commissione d by CODA (Choral Organizations & Developing Artists), composer Richard Burchard selected a poem by Christina Rossetti that celebrates spring in a more pensive way. Speaking poetically of how spring passes ultimately into death, Burchard's music is thoughtful and soothing. Accompanied by piano and French Horn, the piece is primarily SAB, with only slight TB divisions at the very end.

“The Hymn!” is a contemporary a cappella arrangement of some of the most influential and inclusive American patriotic hymns: My Country Tis of Thee, Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Lift Every Voice and Sing. This arrangement is an epic montage from the inspirational pen of none other than prolific choral arranger and composer Stacey V. Gibbs. You can hear and feel the true humanity in the 12/8 rhythmics pulse, supported by a single snare drum–the drum representing the drum major for justice and peace throughout the entire work. Excellent choral writing with a meaningful message for our times. Suitable for high school level singers to professional choirs.

Daniel McDavitt has composed an exquisite trilogy using texts from three American greats: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham Lincoln, and William Wordsworth. Although they can be performed individually, they are most powerful as a set, each with flute obbligato. The first “memory” from Emerson is about music, and is joyful and buoyant. The second “memory” is from Lincoln, and is more reflective about childhood. The final “memory” by Wordsworth combines the thoughts of the previous two in a mature understanding. A delightful trilogy for high school choirs.

Trevor Gomes has beautifully enhanced the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The melody is beckoning, the harmonies lush and compelling, and the words, of course, are classic. Although the piece works nicely with just piano, the string quartet adds a richness that should not be avoided if possible.Trevor Alan Gomes is a name to be looking for, and one we expect will be seen more often. Here is a piece containing all the richness and harmonic interest in every Burchard tune but confined to just 4 voice parts. Even more remarkable is that the 4 parts are SSAB, so even a middle school choir could possibly use this piece. The text is popular, one often set to music. But Richard Burchard is one of the most commissioned composers of our time and so expect the best. Excellent for concert or festival use.

The Cry of Jeremiah, a four movement work for choir and organ commissioned by the American Guild of Organists, was a smashing success at its premiere in 2012. “Hallelujah” is the final movement from the work which works equally well with piano.
